2003 F350 Superduty 2 wd 7.3L. On the right side the tie rod adjuster has 2 clamps but it also has another piece that clamps on the inner rod and has a tail that sticks between the 2 clamps. What is this piece called and what is it's purpose? The 2 clamps also have a flat bar between them that keeps them aligned.

I'm not sure I'm following you so maybe this will help. Pitman arm is what connected to the steering box. "Drag Link" is the first adjustment bar that goes from the pitman arm to the passenger tie-rod ends. Through the first knuckle, "tie_rod" is the next adjustable bar that connects the 2 knuckles together.
The drag link adjuster adjusts for steering angle at the wheel. The tie-rod adjust for toe between the 2 front tires.
The "trac bar" is the solid non adjustable bar that goes from the frame to the axle housing. that bar locates the axle left to right.

This is a 2wd Ford so there is no "drag Link". The right inner tie rod goes to the pitman arm and the left tie rod attaches to it. It goes to the right outer tie rod where the adjuster sleeve is. On the adjuster sleeve there are 2 clamps. Linking the 2 clamps there is a flat piece of steel so the clamps stay aligned. There is a piece clamped on the inner tie rod, you can call it a drag link if you want. It clamps just past the threads and has a tail or tang that sticks between the 2 clamps. That is the piece I am asking about. I'll see if I can get a pic.

I’ve worked on many super duty’s I know the piece you’re talking about don’t know why or what it’s called but seen many trucks with them and many with ou and have replace front ends and had them rusted and bent and not put them back on and never had any ill effects from not having them

I called Moog and asked their tech guy about it. I was surprised when he took my # and said he'd talk to engineering and get back to me, which he did within the hour. Engineering said it wasn't a required part, it is a redundant safety for aligning the clamps. The reason for this was because I was using Moog parts and the way they made the part with a taper before the threads that clamp would not work. They do have a mark on their part and instructions to line the clamp ears up with the mark. The truck from the factory also has a bar between the clamps so you have to keep them aligned.
