Bracket Talk
Something Different

B KINGSomething Different
The far quad in the pic is one of our drag ATV's. The quad was primarily used for bracket racing, but in this pic it was being used for heads-up/grudge racing.
I did the initial research, development, building & testing of our NHRA legal 1/4 mile drag ATV. The project started around 2005. Around 2015 I gave all the quad stuff to my son's.
Anyway, the main drag quad is coming home to dad. It will be reconfigured primarily for 1/8-mile heads-up racing. I might swing my leg over the seat for some testing, but it's primarily for my youngest son to race again.

B KINGNot directed at you specifically Goob. A properly built drag ATV is a very quick straight-line performer. Most people take them for granted on their ET & the #1 comment is "that's cute". Our comeback is always "wait till you see cute run".
Anyway, our quad in the pic is a Yamaha Banshee with a bored & stroked 443cc twin on race gas. The quad ran low 6's in the 1/8th & 10.0's in the 1/4.
The performance example was old school times & doesn't hold a candle to what they are doing now with them!

B KINGThis is the same quad as the OP, with a slightly bigger motor. The last time it was on the track was 2019. It was running well into the 9's in the 1/4 mile.
It is currently getting freshened up for testing sometime this fall or winter.

B KINGWe got the Banshee DMX home about 3 weeks ago. Between it, the new grandson & the race car I've been pretty busy.
The main thing I've been working on is the clutch; it's critical with these engines that make very peaky HP & not very good torque. While I didn't make any changes to the clutch. It got inspected & baselined with its current set-up. We are using a single stage lock-up system for now & may change to our multi-stage eventually.
As for the engine tune, we'll be starting from scratch on the fuel side. We're switching it from methanol to Q16. The carbs are Lectrons & we had to replace the needles & changed out the power jets with ones suited for gas. As for the ignition we are staying with the same timing/curve as it was with alky. We also removed the dual fuel pumps but are using dual needle seats on each carb using gravity to feed them.
The quad does use a wheelie bar, but it's not on in the pic.

B KINGBig,
I have no desire to climb on this thing for a full hit. The only thing I will be doing is short hits to get the clutch right! I will tell you this, it was a hoot to race this quad on asphalt, 300' dirt/sand & hill shoot!

We put some heat cycles on the engine today. Then got 2 short hits on the quad. We were without any traction on the coarse asphalt in front of the house. It was black tracking the tires until we got out of it in 3rd gear. The 1st hit was without the 2-step & the 2nd with. The latter was worse & got into a little tire shake; I don't remember that happening before.
Anyway, going to buy some prep & pour a puddle. Then go down the road a little for some better asphalt. Hopefully get a little better traction for more test hits.
Then it's off to the track in late Jan. for more testing

B KINGWe got some testing done on the streets of Mexico today. My big son was riding today. This video is a short hit to around 300' getting into 3rd gear. As you can hear we had a Bogg on the 1-2 shift. We made 4 hits today & the last one we got it right. We never got it to hook in 1st gear, but it got better as we lowered the tire pressure. The last run was pretty darn good for the street & ran it through 4 gears.
We got home & started inspecting the plugs/clutch. The plugs showed fat & will wait to lean the power jets out once we get some 1/8th mile runs on it.
The clutch showed no heat in the plates as we figured it has too much base pressure at the launch. We took 20 lbs. of base pressure out. We also had a little slippage on the 3-4 shift & we added 15g of weight to 3 of the lock-up arms.
Next weekend we are headed to the track for the 1st TnT & some time slips.

Thanks Barry, No data logging & no plans for it, yet!
Tire video would do us no good with spinning thru 1st gear. Traction on the 1st testing was spinning into 3rd gear. When we get some 1st gear hook, I will take better tire video, maybe. I hate taking pictures & videos!
I thought I had mentioned it, but I guess I didn't. Our 1st heads-up race with the quad is the Kingman Street Drags (legal) in May. That's why we are testing on the street in Mexico. In Kingman AZ we'll be racing heads-up on asphalt. The street actually takes rubber pretty good, but gets limited sporadic prep. I'm trying to find a happy medium with the clutch set-up for them conditions.
