I have replaced about every factory hitch I have had with Curts. I have been happy. Picked up one from a guy who never installed it, and I transposed a number. It's for a silverado long bed, and I have a short bed.
No biggie. What I need is a 15302, not the 15312. Extra duty class V. Well they seem to be on back order or whoever has them in stock or they are higher than giraffe pu22. So looking at the 15703, which is a higher rating. But....it has the 2-1/2" receiver, so you need the sleeve, and all the slop that comes with them. Half the reason I didn't like the factory one.
Anything you guys are doing with the sleeved models that make them less sloppy?

I have considered welding the sleeve in place, and even welding a nut to the bottom and one side for a wedging bolt. Heck of a thing to *******ize a new hitch. But at least the damn pin hole would stay round then.

On one of my hitches the hole was getting loose and I have had one stolen before. So what I did was drilled a hole I think 5/8" through the hitch and the receiver and then put a grade 8 bolt in there with a nylock nut in addition to the pin and lock I had. There is virtually no movement now, it is stronger and it makes it a little harder to steal.
Was not hard to drill, I took a 1/8" drill bit and drilled through one side of the receiver until it hit the hitch and then took it out and drilled it through hitch with drill press 1/8 so it was straight. Then put it back in and drilled through all of it to use the hitch as a drill guide. Stepped all the holes up and bolted it in. And the hole will stay round.

Excuse my ignorance, I'm sure it can't be this easy. However, couldn't you purchase a 2 1/2" ball mount and install your trailer ball on it? Take care. Tom Worthington

Not dumb. But I have all sorts of trailers, some that use 2" balls, some that use load levelers. So I'm looking at a few hitches to replace, and I don't think the 2-1/2 is even all that common. Might be my ignorance there.

Factory receiver on my Chevy is for 2” and is sloppy as heck. It was that way when new and it was even replaced once due to recall and replacement one is sloppy too. I am gonna replace it soon because I am tired of hearing it bang around back there. I thought it was the hitch getting worn but hitch fits tight in motorhome receiver.

I also like Curt hitches but the one I bought for my motorhome was also too sloppy. I bought a hitch tightener and it seems to work pretty good.... its like a U-bolt with a plate that clamps around the hitch (I refuse to jump through hoops to post a picture on here so you'll just have to Google "hitch tightener). I forget where I heard it but someone told me all the manufacturers make the receivers slightly larger now because so many people complained of the ball mount rusting and freezing in place making them difficult to remove. Not sure if that's true or not but it wouldn't surprise me - it would just be another example of where people who do things the right way get to pay for everyone else's laziness!

They make a real simple U-Bolt deal that can be used to take all slack out of everything that I may consider using. Adds time to installing/removing the hitch. But at least my hole will stay round. Wait. Well you know.

Before I switched the hitch frame out on my old truck, I dug around to find some material I could make some shims, to slip in, with a hole to register them in place, with the big grade 8 bolt I had used, to take out 90% of the slack left. It was used for a little over a year, until I read about the propensity of factory setups failing.

All these receivers are oversized providing a sloppy fit with the hitch. To further exacerbate this issue, the hole in the receiver for the hitch pin rounds out. TorkLift‘S hitch is the only one that I’m aware of that has this hitch reinforced with hardened washers in each side.

Bucky, that shows to be 2" wide on the ID of the U-bolt.

If I had this problem I would lay 2 wide beads of weld down the length of the ball mount that is inside the receiver on the top and 1 side. Grind that to the fit that you want. That way you have some surface area that won't wear really fast.

Okay, I thought you were still talking about the 2 1/2" ball mount/receiver combo.

It got confusing. Receiver is 2-1/2 but all the hitches I own are 2”
