Sucks for sure lent a small block to a fellow racer so he could make license passes in his dragster brought it back with two multi piece rods wasn’t going to go any faster than 9.50 in a dragster but didn’t tell me he didn’t have a rev limiter and even track manager told me sounded like it was wound up to the moon in burn out

thats not good!! but thats not what happened here...thats why i dont think mike is knowlegable on this. what happened here as the motor came apart metal got into the timing chain and bent the pin on the front of the camshaft.this retards the timing and casues the valves to touch pistons.

Anything else ?

Rod that broke either has a clean bearing on the big end or it doesn’t.
If it spun a bearing that’s what broke the rod.
Both valves hitting pistons hard on the flat may be from before the blow up or after. Tough to tell.
Bent pins, broken chains....valves hitting pistons.
When did it break? Burnout, top end, high rpm ?
It’s tough diagnosing wrecked engines but you have to look for the start point/cause

I agree about the comments on date on bearing. I have 20 sets or so left over from our TA/FC that cleveite gave us in 1994 all brand new in box or sleeve they came in.

Bad News
#4 top washed clean and twisted in the bore Broken piston, rod is also twisted Head gasket seal between 4 and 6 upper and lower looks suspicious Oil in valley is already milkshake, usually will not happen on just a blow up
And damn near everybody has old new bearings on the shelf. The date doesn't mean s hit. Older are better before Mahle bought Cleveite. Last 2 sets I used I had to file the embossing off the back of the shells because it was raised up,

LOLOL...its not even my motor...i just feel bad for the guy.couple throttle stop passes and kaboom!! i understand the bearings can be good from 1968 but people are missing my point. if you are re bearing your own motor and you have some older bearings down in your basement that is fine...but wheen a professional engine shop charges someone 7000.00 to freshen a motor i feel the bearings should be brand new not something laying around from 15 years ago...but thats just my opinion he has no reciepts and the motor dosent look 12 passes new and 7k worth of new parts in it...but wtf i know lol

Michael, you could never trust anyone selling a used car, whether it be a daily driver or race car. You also can’t trust anyone with your $ or a friend, neighbor, relative with your wife.
That said, sucks for him but based on the info you have provided, your friend didn’t do his homework and took everything he was told as the truth with no receipts, invoice, etc. That approach usually doesn’t turn out well for the buyer unless you know the car and the owner personally.
Is the engine fixable/worth fixing?

A professional engine shop freshened it but no receipt for $7000 job . PT Barnum was right ...

Few "throttle stop" passes is all. I like that one. That's what everyone does new car first few passes LoL!
This thing got zinged. If the cam pin breaks off at full throttle, it would retard and bounce all the exhaust valves, if it did advance which it wouldn't, it would bounce all the intake valves.
This thing got rev'd to the moon and bounced both intake and exhaust valves.

kinda like that race you lost down there in bradenton? gotta accept the facts
The only comparison there is with this and me getting handed a yellow time slip by Bradenton track officials, 45 minutes after the same track officials handed me a white time slip 45 minutes earlier is, someone is looking for a free handout based on tall tales.

I'm thinking today if a guy has old leftover bearings in his shop unused, he's lucky to have parts right now!

What did the 7K rebuild consist of?
Seems pricey for a SBC.
I don't see 7K unless a new short block along with going through the heads.
Something doesn't add up. If they are adding new valve covers, oil pan, water pump, intake.. That's not part of a rebuild. That's just changing stuff.
PS I have bearings in my garage that are that are older than that. I have new cylinder heads from 2001. I'm not an engine builder though. I'm just a hack. I'd use them if I had a need too.
It's called basic Grammar Mikey......might try it sometime......it's referred to as a nonstandard word, improper useage..
