Missing tooth grinding sound is usually bad starter drive. Sprag in starter is slipping.

I have the car up in the air and hooked up a remote button. I watched it bang in and out like I was poking the starter button real fast. Is the hitachi worth fixing ? I think it was only 150bux or so . Thx

The drive, retail, is likely about half the cost of a new starter. It is for my MSD starter anyway.

Make sure you have enough volts to the solenoid wire as well. If there is not enough, it wont have a strong enough magnetic field to hold it in, same if the hold in winding in the solenoid is open. The pull in, will bring the drive into the flexplate but if the hold in is not strong enough, the drive will pull back out.

Solenoid windings

^^^^^^^^ This.. Put the + multimeter lead on starter and crank. If your reading is less than 10.5 volts you have a voltage drop issue. At 9.5 v it'll start to release the starter drive.

i have 13.2v , it aint clickin' like a dead battery does . it cranks the car like always but the bangin' in and out sounds like its eating up hells 1/2 acre . its not damaged anything (like flex plate/starter gear) yet tho .

This makes sense with a 16v battery.

It just started doing this. I have the ddi mega panel and never have had any ever issues. I must have a bad starter going on here

13.2 while cranking? Wow, that is good for sure!

So the drive itself, is going in and out? Like it is driving in and engaging, then pulling out, then back in over and over? It does sound to me like trouble in the solenoid.

Yes sir, that’s what it’s doing . It’s 13.+ and like 12.6-8 cranking. And it’s way more violent than a low voltage clickin’ .

I haven’t taken the starter off yet but if it’s doing that on the car it aught to do it on the floor. I’m wondering if it be best just to get a new one and take this thing to get fixed for a spare starter for the boat lol

If you can find the correct replacement solenoid, it will probably be around 35 - 40$

If the gears and clutch on the drive are still very good, it is not bad to change the solenoid, but if there is wear on the gear, or if the clutch feels weak, I would just replace the whole thing and keep the old one for spare parts.

That is what I did with my first MSD. Which worked out well since it kicked back once and broke a tooth on the drive so I had the old drive at least and wasn't left sitting and waiting for parts Smile

Pretty certain he didn't do a voltage drop test the way it's supposed to be done. Sounds like it is a starter problem not voltage anyway.

you need a new drive.

should be in everyone's trailer regardless of whose starter you run.
