I am looking at making a new top to my tunnel ram, and I don't want a flat plate so I am looking at machining billet aluminum to my design. My question is what Aluminum billet is best. Can you use a Cast aluminum like a 7000 series?

6061 is your cheapest best route. Easy to machine and easily available. You can by pieces for good prices off Ebay even. I have bought pieces up to 2" thick 18" x 24" for fixturing. You can use cast plate such as MIC6 or any of the 5000, 2000, or 7000 series aluminums if you are just machining but you might not like the bill for no better outcome. I keep thinking of things. Any welding going to be done to it? Curtis ____________________________ 2017 and 2018 Osage Casinos Tulsa Raceway Park No-Box Champion 2018 Div4 Goodguys Hammer award winner

I have been thinking Mic 6 (7000 series) as it will not warp during machining. And there is no planned welding as of yet... At my job we work with 6061 mostly, for molds and it has a tendency to warp/bow at times.

Didn't realize you worked with it. Personally I would still make it out of 6061-T6. Just start thick enough to machine the bottom, then the top and then skim the bottom again. Should take the stress out of it. But it sounds like you already knew what you wanted to do though.
