LOL, Bob.
Of course it's insane.
But waaay back when I first started, I had a 67 Mustang daily driver that I street raced. At the time I worked in a Oldsmobile/Cadillac dealership taking home 80.00 a week after a couple of years I got a 10.00 raise my take home was then 88.00. Single income.
Married with a kid, paying rent, utilities and a car/insurance payment. I eventually took a second job part time as a body man. Don't remember my pay but it wasn't much.
Still had a little left over to hop up the engine and start racing at the track.
Everything I had I built myself and people/family thought I was taking from my family and blowing it on a car. They came first but after that it was the car.
So yes it is insane, but it has always been insane. Compared to what I was doing on the income of 50 plus years to what I spend today. I'm still insane..lol

RPROGASGuys, I include myself in that "Totally Insane Group".
I started with a 1952 Ford convertible in which I installed a 1953 303 Olds coupled to a Caddy LaSale side shift 3 speed trans. If I had a dime for every reared or axle I broke in the car I'd be sorta wealthy today. Back then the fastest fuel dragster only ran 150 in the mid 9's.
They're a little faster today.

Take a transmission, converter and air/electric shifter that is approaching the $10,000 range.
Powered by engines and electronic systems now costing $40,000 + (Throttle Stop, Ignition, data recorder, etc. included).
Installed in a $150,000 + custom built chassis.
Towed IN a $60,000 + stacker.
Towed BY a $450,000 + motor home.
Add in the shop and equipment you need to store and maintain the car. Pick a number .
A race entry fee of $360.
And you are in the...... $710,360 range. I purposely did not include the shop at home plus the golf cart expense (where required)
So you can WHAT , try and win $1,800 ????
Is this pricing excessive, absolutely but not unusual. There are many folks out there willing and capable of spending that amount to compete for a $1,800 purse while given the privilege of parking in the dirt or pee gravel and treated like a third World citizen by a $10 - $15 an hour track worker.
If this seems a little insane maybe it's because, frankly, it IS insane.
Bob
One of best posts of the year and you did not even add in cost of Gas (Doubled) and food and the cost of maintaining the car.

-a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. This overestimation occurs as a result of the fact that they do not have enough knowledge to know they don't have enough knowledge.
Before you argue with someone ask yourself, "Is this person mentally mature enough to grasp the concept of a different perspective?" If not there is no point to argue.
