so did I with my 1300+HP 20 degree headed 648 and it has a Callies Magnum crank Wink, steel T&D shaft rockers and BAM .937 lifters

It really did not need to go back but it had been through 2 race seasons and wanted to update the intake. We did put lifters and Springs in at that time. It did not need valve springs but why wouldn't I since the heads where already apart being look at. It won't go back to Sunset till it has over 200 runs this next time.

we put 150 passes on a season and mine was just freshen too...rings, bearings, rod bolts, valve springs, timing belt yada, yada, yada. Lifters were checked and being run again this season. I would expect to change rods and pistons at 600 passes and the crank at least double that.

That all said, the engines I posted here are impressive on the dyno BUT dyno numbers rarely translate into the ET/MPH expected and for me I won't build a spread port/9 or 11 degree engine unless it makes 1400HP minimum with a wet sump and single carb and runs 190+ on the stop at Indy and the only one I know that can build that engine is Gary Stinnett and it will set you back around $55k.

IMO, if 1300+HP is your goal, the 9 degree is not worth the the extra $ nor weight when a proven 1300+HP is being done with SR20 degree engines and I know of at least 1 600+ cube SR20 engine making over 1400 with a single carb but it is not a bracket engine.

These heads aren't heavy at all compared to the 18 degree Big Dukes I had. You can see where they have been lightened. How much I don't know. i wish i would have weighed them. The rocker setup is heavy as hell though. With the talk of happy dynos mine made 1300hp @ 7100 and 1020tq @ 6300 on a stingy dyno.

ep-yes i am a broke dyck with slow junk. but hey, it works for me.

i am not seeing these super fast combos winning every week in anything. i think you just need to be in the middle or at best the faster side of the middle.
Wait till y’all see his 100k Top Sportsman ride…lol

it will still be slow whomper.

Ed,

Joe's 655 single carb deal can make 1400 HP now w/a single carb. Dry sump or no dry sump as they perform the same on the track as the added HP from the dry sump is offset by the added weight of it! Now when I say can now, I mean what it will show on track. Dyno's are no different than flow benches! What that said, and with all engine builders, this is not the off the shelf internet advertised motor. Most don't want this and won't perform the required maintenance which would result in motor failures and bad PR for that builders!

Al, agreed that this type of engine won't be found advertised on Sunset's or anyone else's web site, it's built to spec and most don't want to do the maintenance required for this "bracket" engine which this really isn't, myself included. That's why I chose to go with a 20 degree headed combo, easy on parts, drive to/from our pit and maintenance amounts to oil/filter changes, lash checks and 1300+HP is more than enough power to put me amongst the quickest/fastest everywhere we compete.

Ed,

Not really, we have 3 motors with running cams capable of making this power, some driven to and from the lanes and others towed. Springs will go a season. Just need to keep an eye on things. It's more about the life of the parts than anything else and what's your definition of a bracket motor. As for the life of parts goes, any motor making 1400 HP will chew through parts faster than one making 1200 HP and so on....

IMO, the most efficient way to goes fast is simple, build the lightest safest car possible! Then you spent the cake once for that and save on the motor costs down the road... Cool

It’s now 2022, bracket and super comp cars drive to and from their trailers and IMO so do Top Dragster cars except those with blower motors. As you know, I broke 2 inner, intake valve springs around 100 passes last season. Different spring is installed for this season.

Marks Motor is very impressive. Dyno is a tool. There’s a dyno challenge I’m sure but it’s not the great equalizer ( the track) so until then. Power shows up at the track. Good car good tune. Mark will make it talk.

I stated it is on the dyno, now let’s see what it runs, at what weight and in what air.

Like stated earlier my 9 degree was every bit as reliable as my SR20

But it wasn’t a 1400hp piece and you’ve stared many times here you prefer the SR20 combo over the 9 degree.

Per dyno it was lol…and you stated many times you was going with a spreadport on your next build…didn’t happen

For the reasons I stated above and previously.

On a serious note, just found out that Gary Stinnett is not doing well, has pneumonia, clots in his lungs and is on a ventilator.

We have several blower cars here that drive to and from the lanes. I'll drive if I'm by myself, otherwise I'll tow if I have help. Saves fuel.

Ed, what springs are you running? I was running PAC, NEVER AGAIN! Was having a lot of issues with adjuster nuts coming loose, weird changes in top end, etc...also broke two inner springs. Found out it was the PAC springs. They were going pretty much crazy above 7000 rpm. Talked to PSI and Bob Book. He lost over $20 because of PAC springs. Switched to PSI and issues gone, both of us. My head guy also told me Pat Musi only runs PSI on his stuff. Ever since I haven't even had to adjust my valves. I check them often, but so far adjustments haven't been needed. And it runs better up top as well. Live and learn I guess....and for the record, both springs are the same specs, but the PSI are listed with different frequencies from the PAC.....I just know they work.

been running PSI since 2014 and I've broken springs every season, every engine in the dragster yet never break the Manley Nextek springs aka PAC springs on the firebird engine.

Off topic I know because it’s not bracket, but if you want to see some impressive stuff head over to steve Morris engines Facebook and check out the videos.

I ran PAC in the TD engine, 8400rpm, 30# boost, no issues, changed them at 80 passes, they could have gone more.....
