Shift light setting drifts?

Has anyone ever noticed their tachometer shift light to 'drift' or lose its setting?

Last weekend I was setting in my S10 in the staging lanes waiting for a time trial, and pushed the red button my Autometer Monster Tach to check the setting. I hadn't checked it in quite some time.

I was surprised to note that it indicated a setting of about 6300 RPM, when I thought it had it always set for 5900 RPM. So I reset the knob to 6000 RPM.

After the last time trial, I checked again to see it now was set for 5500 RPM.

Ugh; if that is true that the shift light would not maintain its setting, it may have cost me a few rounds lost this season.

I didn't want to take any chances resetting it right before eliminations, and just left it.

Lol, as it turned it out the truck maybe started to run a little more consistently; I wound up winning 5 rounds then to win that race. And even won a run-off with a driver who I was now tied with in points.

Thanks in advance!

The worst I've seen is an Autometer Autogauge series tach. If you didn't check it before each pass you had problems.

We had one in a Sponsored ride; glad we didn't use it for shifting!

B Nusz, I think I have a shift light that uses rpm chips put up somewhere. If you want it it's yours for the shipping cost.

Yes, the ones with the adjusting knob drift really bad - so bad that they are useless.

Unbeknownst to me, even without power on, slightly twisting the knob, even without pushing it in, can change the setting.
Coiled cord on the steering wheel can get up against it.
I check mine at least once before the burnout, after any steering wheel turns have been made.

Thank you all for the kind, helpful responses.

Curtiss, I may take you up on that offer for the shift light. May I ask what model it is? I don't wish to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I want to insure it would work for me. Otherwise I'd maybe be depriving a needier racer of it.

Lol, I've long wanted to race at Tulsa, but it's always on the same weekend as the big gun show.

I spoke with Mark at Autometer tech/service a moment ago. Cool dude. He advised me to send my tach to them to examine and possibly repair it.

He said there would be no charge, so Autometer must have a heck of a warranty!

I suppose that tach has a rheostat in it, which can get dirty or corroded over time. As an electronics man, I would suspect that.

Thank again, guys.
