RacePak drive shaft speed sensor
Looking for a generic replacement speed sensor for a RacePak data logger. I have zero RacePak experience, so I don’t know if they designed it to except a 2 wire sensor or needs a 3 wire Hall effect sensor. Any help on securing a generic speed sensor, that has worked on a racers RacePak is appreciated.

Mine has magnets on the collar so it's not a Hall Effect sensor. Just 2 wires for a mag pickup.

Every racepak I've worked on has had 3 wire sensors.

FWIW I use Low Dollar Motorsports ones..Less money but you have to buy a Molex connector for the wiring. Pretty simple and they have instructions

I switch to 3 pin dtm connector.

Sounds like they can use a two wire or 3 wire sensor. Is that based on the system vintage or do they all have the ability (to run either) and the setup tool lets you select the type sensor?

It will mostly depend on the wiring harness of the data logger. Some of the older v300 data loggers used the 2 wire sensor. The v300SD, Sportsman and IQ3 data loggers all use the 3 wire sensor.

Just to clarify, here is how you identify the 3 main shaft speed sensors used in a car.
1st is a variable reluctance (VR) this is a 2 wire sensor that measure ferrous metal. Note the output voltage goes up as the speed increases.

2nd is a hall effect. A hall effect is a 2 wire sensor that senses magnets as they move close by. Output voltage is constant.

3rd is a gear tooth hall effect sensor. This is a 3 wire sensor that has an internal magnet that senses ferrous metal. Output voltage is constant.
