Make a positive stop from an old spark plug. That way you’ll know for sure.

You would bring the piston close to tdc pull the spring and install and indicator on the valve stem top.
Rotate to highest reading and there’s tdc.

I never thought of using that method.....it's a good way...not perfect but if done right would be very close...

I measure degrees at .050 down on either side, and again at .100 down, the degree in the middle is true TDC. Same as you'd do with the head off. I'm just using the valve as the go between to physically touch the piston with the dial indicator.

Basically what we did, went to 42° and made a pass, way better throttle response, way better coming off stop in super comp and mph is still going up from runs with less timing. Motor sounds happy, plugs look safe/good. First time they have come out not looking black. Clearly the thing likes more timing. I might give it 1 maybe 2 more just to see if it likes it. But so far I'm happy. This is my wife's car, and she was able make it down to 4 cars/semis and get paid in just her third super comp race ever. First 2 races we struggled with car issues.

Sunoco Maximal (116) may not give you the best results, I've basically use the same bore/stroke, Dart 325 combination and Sunoco Supreme (112) gave me better results, when I tried VP C16 and Sunoco Maximal it didn't produce the same results regardless of how much timing I used, including upwards of 42 + degrees. That longer rod (.400) slows the piston as it approaches TDC plus the dwell time at TDC is longer. I'm not a big fan of high dome pistons/large combustion chambers (120cc +) with long rods.

Personally I would try Sunoco Supreme (112) and read the plugs to see what the combination will tolerate while producing better power. EGT's and 02 sensors are great but to me the plug tells me more. Move a EGT probe 3/8th of an inch and the reading changes, that spark plug is IN the cylinder it does not move, it creates the flame and the corresponding flame propagation, it sees everything.

Just my .02

I considered switching fuels, but it wasn't possible at the time and I'd like to be able to carry just 1 kind of fuel for both cars. So far adding timing has made a huge gain and I think we have something that works. It seemed like a lot of timing so it was hard to justify it, but it's very clear it likes it.

Will, I would follow what the time slips says it likes.
Back in the the old small bore TRW slug days I ran upto 44* without any problems until I switched from TH400 to a glide. Apparently the increased load at the gear change was an issue. (Blown head gaskets twice in a row)
I hooked up a micro switch to the shifter that would retard from 44 to 41-42 at the gear change. No problems after that.

An alky carb, and 38 degrees of timing will most likely be .2 faster to the 660, if its a thought. That combo responds VERY well to methanol

Ran a similar combo but with 345 Darts, Toilet on methanol. liked lots of timing, and some fuel. never hurt any rings or otherwise. Only changed after I wore out a 10 year old set of eagle rods.
