So - how much oil pressure?

So - how much oil pressure?
Just reading another post here about someone looking for a oil pump pressure spring.

100 pounds, 90 pounds, 70 pounds, all kinds of numbers....so what is the general consensus on oil pressure for a 1000 hp BBC?

What weight oil? NA or Nitrous/Blower? Peak RPM?

Dry Sump? Vacuum pump? What pan vacuum?

Bracket or max effort?

Anything above 60-70 is probably fine, but to really narrow it down all of the above will come into play.

Just a typical bracket motor, NA, wet sump, vacuum pump, normally a 15w50. Like to stay under 7200-7300.

The 10 PSI per 1000 RPMs is OK, its a bit conservative side though. A little more than needed won't hurt.

My 555 with castrol20w50 spun to 7450 has 48psi.

Has for 3 years now and bearing look like new. No synthetic oil. Oil changed about every 50 runs.

Runs 9.0 at 153. In 3550lb car.

Don't need with what is working. Pressures steady on racepak.

Not sure if the above is good or bad. Just reference for ya.



Configuration: 3350#, 582 C.I.,

60 - 1.24
1/8 - 5.53@ 126MPH
1/4 - 8.73@ 159MPH



3700#+210lb driver, FULL interior, through mufflers, 10.5 tire.

582 using 20W-40 during the summer (80 to 110 degrees) months it carries 55-65, in the winter (40 to 60 degrees) I use 10W-30 and it still holds 55-65.

I was advised that with bushed lifters to stay away from using a heavy weigh oil during the winter months, like 50 weight, (unless you use a pan heater) the bushings don't get enough initial lubrication. Needle bearing lifters can tolerate the heavier oil.

Mine is small block but I usually run right around 55-60 psi and bearings always look perfect. The more pressure you run the more oil it will pump up on top and it also wastes a lot of energy and puts more stress on cam and distributor gear.

Also bearing clearances and weight of oil makes a difference in pressure required.

We have one motor that will go 55-65 all day, cold to hot lapping. Our other motor will go 45-65 all day, 65 first start and once it's warm it'll stay around 55-60 heading to the lanes and come back from a pass around 45. These are two completely different combinations though, block, head etc. Both using VR1 20w-50
