Got a question!!!
Got an alky carb and if I leave it set for more than two weeks it corrodes the bowls and starts eating at the metering blocks.
Race the car about a month ago and the carb performed flawless(won the race!!!)put the car in the trailer and did nothing. Went to the track today and unloaded,warmed up and went to make my first run. I matted it on the starting line and it wouldn't recover. made my second pass and the car did better, recovered slowly when matting it and picked up a few #s.
I am wondering a few things. I have pulled it apart after a few weeks setting and it looks like sand in the bowls once I drain the fuel and let it air dry. could it be corroded and cleaning itself out the more I run??? does this sand like material dissolve once alky is present of does it stay gritty and clog the passage ways??should I drain the carb after every race and fill with gas or mystery oil?? if I fill it with gas would this stop the corroding even if there is some alky left in it. Also would it start and run on the gas until and alky mixed in the bowls?? if I put gas in it how much should I put to eliminate corroding??
Any help would be greatly appreciated... Also the alky has lube and grape smellies.

Too much lube. I add maybe a capful to every 10/15 gallons. The engine comes apart every two years and looks good. If i don't run for a couple weeks, I hit the fuel pump to keep the bowls full. The bowls look like new. It is worth noting i have gone the route of running the bowls empty then adding gas after a race, that works too, just kind of a pain I don't personally think is needed.

Alcohol absorbs water from the air. The alcohol evaporates quicker than the water is has absorbed. The water left behind causes the corrosion. Some claim that lube coats the parts and helps with corrosion. The only time I ever used lube is when I didn't have any choice but to buy fuel that already had lube in it. I never had any problems with corrosion.

What to do to prevent corrosion? Start your car once a week and let it warm up. (perhaps more often if you're in a really humid location). If your can't start you car due to your neighbors.....move and find better neighbors.

Does your carb have the nice aluminum bowls with site windows? Most of the guys that I see complaining about this as well as carbs I have worked on that do this are using the aluminum bowls. BLP sells anodized aluminum bowls or I just always use the old school zinc bowls. Mine can sit for a few weeks and worse case is it just gets some powdery residue that dissolves as soon as alky hits it.

One thing to check is that you don't have an aluminum fitting somewhere in your system that is being eaten up. What you are seeing may not be the carb itself.

That said I have ALWAYS used Klotz top lube 1qt to 55 gallons and have never had it cause a problem. My bowls and carb body are coated and just like 67ss all I ever get is minimal white powder if I let it sit long enough to evaporate the alcohol.

Do You Have A Fuel Filter if So take it apart and get rid of element !!
then drain bowls and fill with gasoline while it sets

Been there and had the same problems. Mine was the aluminum hose and hard fitting deteriorating from the inside out. I replaced all my fuel lines and fittings with hard anodized ones, have not had a problem since. A lot of people are going with stainless to eliminate the problem for good.

My car sits for weeks between races. I do not drain the fuel system or bowls. Like said above, minimal white residue if anything when it sits.

This is a reoccurring topic and I don't know why? It takes so little time to pop fuel lines cap them off and empty the bowls and dry them out including accelerator pump. Been doing this for over 10 years bowl gaskets replaced every 4 years. My Braswell carb looks like new inside and out......

Are you talking about the white residue or the fitting being corroded and falling apart?

The white residue is harmless, fitting looking like they were eaten by termites, not so much.

Some people like to fog their engine every week. Some like to drain the fuel system. I fill my cell and leave the bowls full, that's it. No problems, no worries. Only time I've had an issue was when the aluminum fittings deteriorated. Same car, same fuel system for over 20+ years, was probably time to change them out anyway.

Tom glad that works for you. I'm out here in the desert SW were the temps are just plan hot. Braswell told me how to do my setup and maintenance and never had a problem. So I was giving my 2 cents is all ....
