I had a 7al2 do something similar years ago. I also had a worn distributor gear do it. I wasnt running a crank trigger at that time though.

Do you have access to a msd tester?

This box was in the car when I purchased it so I really don't know how old it is. If my testing Saturday doesn't show anything fruitful I will probably just put a new one in and have this one repaired for a spare, or to sell.

I recommend having a spare. I have had several go bad.........

Techwest has repaired three for me but he is hard to get a hold of. All worked perfect after he did them.

"Dunning-Kruger Effect"
-a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. This overestimation occurs as a result of the fact that they do not have enough knowledge to know they don't have enough knowledge.

Before you argue with someone ask yourself, "Is this person mentally mature enough to grasp the concept of a different perspective?" If not there is no point to argue.

At around 7100-7200 my car will act just like it's on a rev limiter. I have to shift at 6900 and can't run 1/4 mile. Has anyone ever seen an ignition box act like that.

Things I have done:
New crank trigger pick up.
New distributor.
Shimmed springs first then changed springs.
Carb is different but have o2 data anyway.
I use a 3 step and have pulled the high side chip.
Made sure trigger wires are away from anything.

I was going to test Friday but they cancelled. I plan on pulling the three set plug out of the box. Other than that I will change the ignition as a last resort.

Yes!! 7-AL2 was "scattering" sparks, we discovered it trying to time the new engine.

Got to make 1 pass last night with the 3 step pulled completely out and started popping right at 7200 again.

Saw on data recorder that it was showing 29lbs of oil pressure that run so I put it up. I think it’s bad info but have to check it out.

Not sure if you have access to an MSD tester. If you think the rev limiter is activating you could test that without wasting more test runs. If its a rev limiter falsly activating the tester will cut out above that rpm. While it wont let you test for a miss you may be able to prove or eliminate 2 step without going to the track.

Probably a good idea. I will have time to send it to MSD now. Engine is coming out. At the very least I wiped the coatings off and started to get into some bearings.
