Car Paint
I did my own a few years ago and certainly gained a TON of respect for guys and gals that do this professionally. It's really a lot of work. Mine ain't nothing to talk about but there's a sense of pride that I have built every inch of the car including the paint & body. I consider it a 50 footer.

Current Mustang is in the shop as we speak, expecting about $2500. Guy says it will be show quality but I'm hoping it's NOT because I do plan on driving it and it will get a scratch, ding, dent.

Another local guy (well known) is $70/hr and approximately 70 hours worth on my Mustang-which has most of the prep work already done by previous owner who was a body guy (but not a painter).

Location has a lot to do with it too. Where I used to live, $2500 would get you a coat of primer.

Show quality for 2500? Hard to believe. Just painted our car and its 1000 for each gallon of clear and it has 2 gallons on it.. Not even talking about the cost of the paint for the car which the main color is a candy.

Got a quote on wrap for FED cpl weeks ago.Using our old Starr Rider scheme for full body was 2800 bucks. Not cheap but they do good work from what I have seen and its not 10k. While I would rather have paint job its not happening unless that guy a lottery is pulling the right numbers sometime soon.

Its not uncommon for good materials for a complete paint job to run into the $3-5000 range. Hell there are clears out there that a a couple grand a gallon. Paint is one of those things where you get what you pay for. Having said that we have used "cheaper" base materials and better clears to get a more durable and better looking end product.

One thing to consider, (unless you plan on keeping the car till you die), a black chassis and a straight white paint job is the fastest thing to sell....best to personalize it with wrap and it can always be took off .

We used Diamont on this, I have no idea where it falls in the levels of quality but it didn't seem out of this world expensive. He talked about a wholesale line he had on Glazereth clear but I don't know what he ended up going with. I think paint you pretty much make your own luck in that I spoke with probably 50 painters over the last 8 - 10 years knowing the paint was approaching 20 years old. Most painters don't wanna open up a 60's era muscle car. I got lucky in that I ran across a guy who claimed he loved painting old cars and obviously has a talent for paint and and body work, plus prefers painting 60's corvettes and muscle cars. I think you make your own luck when your patient in selecting the painter. Plan ahead.

But, what is the difference between, $200 clear and, $1000 clear? UV protection? Is it faster? For that price, I’d have to glue the receipt to my hood and clear over it! Just so people could see I was mad at my money!

I have been trying to find someone in the North east to do a wrap for the corvette and it is hard to get anyone to even call you back or answer the phone in the first place. I am right outside of Philly so if anyone in this area knows of someone please let me know.

Good God I would cry real tears if I scratched or dented a RACE CAR with a $20k paint job. Granted my stuff isn't new nor close to it. But this is a car that I am in and out of 20 times a day (I hope) and carry in a trailer with all sorts of potential damage makers.

Show quality for 2500? Hard to believe.

Went over there Monday to look at his progress. He's pretty close to "show quality" and we're on budget (currently). Quite frankly I wouldn't be afraid to take it to a show. He has gone WAY beyond what I asked of him! Keep in mind he's only doing the exterior and all jams. Underhood and underbody and interior I took care of while I had the car in the air, it was pretty nice to begin with. Biggest problem on the interior was the prior owner being a heavy smoker, so there was a ton of cleaning that had to be done. Lots of brown towels. Exterior was trashed...clear coming off. Looks like it never got an ounce of loving at any time in it's lifespan.
