Hello all, I got some used 5.13 gears I want to use. Only thing it's a 9.5 inch ring gear. I have a complete moser unit with 4.56 gears. Looking at the parts catalogs, I dont see any specific 9.5 inch ring gear parts. The only thing I can find is I will need the large pinion support. Is there anything else that is 9.5 specific? Thanks in advance for any advice. Nothing that I know of, the gear is just bigger is all You may have to grind a notch in your housing to get the ring gear to fit in it. I did on mine. Nothing 15 minutes with a die grinder won't cure. Also the guy who set mine up also had to grind some clearance to the 3rd member it self. This was a MW big bearing bolt thru 3rd member, Moser may be differant

Thanks Steve, Any one have any good reference material for setting on up? I have done it before, but its been a little while. Hello All, So how much clearance do I need between the gear and the case, best I can tell, I have between .080-.100 clearance. Is this enough? Another question, is it better to be tight or loose on the pinion? .050 shimpack gives me about 40 inch pounds to turn and .055 give me near nothing. I need to go back and check my shims to make sure I didn't mix them up. They are new bearings, So I know I need in the 20-25 inch-pounds range. Bill, My personal preference for pinion bearing & side pre-load is just barely. That is to say, very light pre-load. I have found no negative results, and the positive is less friction, less power loss, plus, the car is easy to push. Larry Woodfin

Did you have the dial inch pound torque wrench in your tool box? Or borrow it? If I pull mine out, I use it. Tight for drag racing. It'll be 20 after a dozen or so TB launches. That's plenty of clearance on the ring.

Mike, if it is good after 20 hits, how is it after 40? Larry Woodfin

Bill, the clearance is good. Larry Woodfin

Thanks all, So I am trying to get a good pattern and I am struggling a little bit. I read that with used gears, sometimes its hard to get a clean pattern. This is with .012 bl, a little loose, just ran out of time to mess with it. Looking for opinions on this pattern. You got it, tighten backlash.

Agree, pattern looks good on drive and coast sides for used gear set. I would tighten BL to about .008 if it were mine. Does the ring gear have a BL distance marking engraved on it? Dan "Jim" Moore Much too young to feel this damn old!!

Yes, it's engraved .008, I just ran out of time messing with it when I took the pictures. I am out of practice, this one gave me some hassle to get the patterns right. I will probably get it all buttoned up tonight and get the gears in the car this weekend. So what's the going recommendation for gear oil? I used royal purple last time with no issues. Anything with GL-5 additive, 80W90. I use Valvoline Racing, I used to be able to buy it local Western Auto / Discount Auto Parts. You can't even buy 30, 40, 50 motor oil local now. I'm sure I couldn't find it local now, three years ago I could. Big changes coming, you can see it on the shelves at the local auto parts store.

I used Valvoline Synthetic 80W90 last season, bought it at O'Reilly. Each of the 4 previous seasons before that I used Redline Full Synthetic Heavy Shock Proof. Both oils left the gears intact and looking good with many trans brake launches on a heavy BBC car in both very hot and cold weather. Dan "Jim" Moore Much too young to feel this damn old!!

Anyone have the torque specs for the 5/8 cap bolts for the moser cases? I can't find it anywhere. Thanks. This is a 1.69 low gear with a 3.89 final & my PTC Opel core pro tree converter 10.0 index I lifted before the 1000 ft block. I'm a tenth slow at the 330 ft, have been 3.81 with a 1.69 low x 5.00 rear gear, 28 x 10 M/T bias and my Transmission Specialties spragless 8" converter. Brodix Track 1 233 are a lot better head out of the box, than they are being given credit.

New gears are set up and ready to go in Here are the old gear, they are used nascar gears with all the bells and whisltles. After thousands of passes, they look like the day I put them in. Its a shame all that sexiness is hidden away. This message has been edited. Bill, I’ve got a 28 spline 9” 4.40 Nascar Gear from Roush new that I removed last fall that look exactly like yours. Cryoed and REM’d. Beautiful. Anyone interested they’re $25 plus the ride. They were marked for index prior to removal.

I would be all over it if they were a mid 5 series gear. Your price seems pretty cheap, think your missing a zero. I am curious to know how much of a difference these gear treatments make in drag racing.
