If one has a option witch would be better 427 SBC
or 427 BBC in a 87 Camaro about 3200 lbs with driver using a power-glide for bracket racing

SBC has a LOT more room in that car!

BBC will go faster for less money, but the plug access and headers will make you wish you had a SBC............

Aftermarket K-Member will help with weight and headers, diaper, etc....... Have them in both of my 3rd Gens.

I'd say a 420" LS SBC would make most sense - hp for $'s. Check into it.

Possibly mid 9's on unleaded gas, with the right cam and heads.

Or cheap 6 liter with a little work on stock heads with a cam and mid 10's on unleaded.

But........ Now the cost to convert, unless you stick with a carb.

An entire takeout engine with the new Holley stuff to run it, plug and play, still, $1200 ECM/Harness plus a fuel pump/regulator/etc...

BBC may be quicker and cheaper for now but from what I've seen injected LSX is the wave of the future for most of us and the cost will come down eventually.

427 SBC is my choice … I'm running a 414 SBC in 2800 pound Camaro with a soft tune. Runs low 10s at 3600 ft. adjusted . P/G with 4.88 rear gear and a tall tire , roll out 103".

I am saying sbc. Like said way more room in that car to work it. I think that with the heads available now, even 23* stuff, the power gap won't be as big as years past. The sbc will be lighter too.

I never though about the Ls3 I see a lot of 6.0 Truck engines for sale on Craigs list for under 3 k with the iron block.Do guys run the carburetor or the fuel injection .I figure I will need at least 550 - 600 hp to go 10.50 in my Camaro with the power glide

MSD makes a box to run the coil packs if you want to run a carb on an LS engine. Keeps your initial cost down, can add the EFI later if you want it.

My nephew bought a 6.0 LS motor with 58,000 miles on it for $500 then did cam swap plus bought a set of heads that had a little work done to them and put carb on it and it made 512 hp on dyno at 6500 but hp hadn’t peaked yet so who know how much more it may have made if any. The shop said with full CBC heads 580 hp easy. He has less than $3500 into the motor. I guess it depends on your area as to what the price of a motor cost.

I am a long-time diehard BBC guy, but I gotta agree with Mike & Mark - In that car, (unless it has a tube chassis), I'd go with a SBC. My 85 Z28 was hard to work on with a small block, can't even imagine with a big block.

1st & 2nd Gen F-Bodies with a BBC, not bad.

4th Gen F-Body, not too bad with the rack and pinion setup, but can be very tough to R&R the engine through the top, but can be done.

3rd Gen F-Body with stock front end, stay-away from a BBC, this is Bracket Racing, keep it easy if you can!
