Small block chevy.383 engine Chevy. Who likes soft hit converter or hard hit. Which one better for bracket..The converter right now is soft hit but the fall back is to much on the shift. car is shifted at 7100 and fall back is 900. The stall is 5900. The car weigh 2180 no driver. The rear gear is a 5.13... I want to change converters for 2025 season. All replys will be welcomed.

Hughes built a really nice soft hit 6400 stall converter for me. It hit right at 6400 from the start. As for ET difference between soft hit and standard did not see any difference.

I would call Kevin or Steven at Hughes and listen to them. They know what they are doing and have the data to get your converter like you want it for your motor.

i am thinking about something like you are talking about. 6400 or 6500 soft hit with about a 400 fall back. car is close, it just start picking up if you double enter it or round robin.

When our 434 SBC was NA, it made peak HP at 5900, 6000 & 6100 rpm. The converter stalled between 5900 & 6000 rpm, it worked really good! I don't know how it was set-up for the hit. I don't know what the shift drop was, I wasn't data logging at the time.

The above same basic set-up reconfigured for a ProCharger. We took a wag at the converter with no dyno numbers. It stalls a little over 5500 rpm & we wanted 6000 rpm. The shift drop is right around 1000 rpm. We have done a rear gear change & should pick-up 300-400 rpm stall & tighten the shift drop, according to our converter guy. Ideally, I think I would like the stall around 6200 rpm. We'll see how it acts when we get the engine back in the car.

Stall and Flash are two different values. TB energized, wot with no chip = Stall rpm. Most rpm achieved after launch prior to fall back (if any) = Flash rpm.

Are you writing/ asking Stall or Flash?

I think you're spinning the 383 faster than you need to, if the heads are standard port 23 degree stuff.
I'd like to see the shift by 6800 max.
Maybe a 4.88 gear would bring things closer in line?

I like a spragless.

My FTI tuned Coan spragless will flash 5800-ish, I shift at 6400-6500, and it falls back to 5950, cross the 1/8th finish at 6400.
Car prints tickets.

My 23 degree heads are heavily ported. Even with the 406 I was shifting at 7500. It seems that a lot of folks have caught onto the loose converter being more consistent.

As far as the hit: in dragsters I always prefer the softer hit. If you chip a little engine where it won’t be a turd at the hit, a hard hitting converter will pop the tire out of the beans. Just my experience

my dads s10 at 2700lbs is soft at 60ft but will out mph most cars in the 8th with a 6400 stall coan even with a 383 until you get over 6200 stall i don't think it's too much the motor lives in a 1K RPM range really, the 2 step is at 3600 bottom bulb

Thanks for all the replies. i like the soft hit 6400 or 6500 hundreds converter that everyone mention. Remember we are bracket racing. We are looking for ways to print tickets not trying to fly. All replies are welcome. Thanks again.

I called Marco Abruzzi four years ago. 3000-lb S10, mild 406, 750 alky carb, 6.40s.
flash 6150-6200, shift 6600 fall back to about 6000-6100 (depends a bit on air conditions), 931 runs, freshened once at 500 (needed nothing) and several Big Checks.
Like Bucky said; everyone has figured out loose is money, no matter if it is faster or slower (we all have dial boards for that part of it).
