Anyone run these in a 565 at 950-1000hp? I have one that was in my 750hp motor and wondering if it will be ok with the new heads and making about 200 more hp.

I had a Compstar/china crank in a SBC. Ran great for maybe 200 runs then the front snout fell off. I'd be a little fraidy at 1k HP. Cool JB

Steve, I have one in my 565 bracket motor. Has over 1000 runs on it. Reher Morrison as checked it twice, last time Johnny said it had a little twist in it but to put back in so I did. That motor has been sitting since I went TD racing but will freshen it up for a future project at some point. Paid like $650 for that crank new, it owes me nothing

I had the snout break off on a Callies Magnum crank SBC at about 650 HP (7000 RPM max?)and new ATI damper. The motor had less than 140 passes. The root cause had nothing to do with crankshaft or damper. It was cheap timing chain the motor builder used. Especially on higher quality crankshafts they have a larger smoother radius and if timing chain gear is not good it will cause a sharp edge and crack right there. Second time that happened to same motor and same builder and poor fool was not smart enough to know what happened. I bought the car with the motor in it and I would not recommend that idiot to anyone.

The whole point is your broken crankshaft may or may not be the fault of the crank. With out performing a proper Autopsy to determine the cause of Death I could not say.

As for Chinese crankshafts I find it interesting that all of our phones, computers, cameras and even the CNC machines that machine those cranks are Made in China yet some people say they are no good. I think the quality of most everything coming out of China is getting better.

I am in China right now and I visited the casting factory that does most of the cylinder heads for GM and Mitsubishi there. Absolutely amazing. They have a huge factory with CNC machines running 24 hours a day. When they come out of there they are perfect and beautiful. The head on my car that I have as a daily driver was done at that factory I toured. Those motors are one of the best. They also do blocks there but at the time I visited they were running heads. Thousands of them.

Crankshafts for most cars in the World right now are made in China and they last for hundreds of thousands of miles. Millions of cars with Chinese made crankshafts and they last pretty good.

I have also learned that many of the High Quality "Made in America" stuff much of critical parts is done in China.

I broke a Liberty crank which I believe is a rebranded Scat in my 950-1000hp 555. It had less than 200 runs on it but the rod journals had been turned .010 because it spun a bearing the season before. It broke in fourth round of eliminations while I was top 5 in points towards the end of the season 2 or 3 years ago. Luckily, the only damage was the crank so we were able to disassemble and put a crank and bearings in it for the following week. Unfortunately that meant putting the same crank back in it since it was the only forged 4.25” crank we could get overnight.

The 555 we built this year has Molnar crank and rods. Would use again.

I have one that was rebranded Trick Flow, Dan in 496 for years and lots of passes. It cracked and kept whiling out main bearings every couple runs but didn’t come apart. Was last race of season and in a buddy’s car when that happened and we could figure out what was going on, luckily for me he lost first round and no further damage.

Ran low 4.70s in good weather and around 80 in the heat of the summer. When I had the bottle on it ran 4.50 spraying a 200 shot for 3 secs.

I always estimated HP around 1000 easy

OP, I've been using Ohio Crankshaft forged in my 496 twin turbo at about 1000hp for several years. Zero issues.

I would venture it was turned with a wheel that did not have the normal .125 radius for the fillet.
It broke at the fillet.
A lot of performance crankshafts get turned every day by machinists that only do stock stuff, and know nothing about turning a performance crank. And will not modify their grinding wheel for the required radius.They then wipe out the .125 fillet that was present, and it adds a second cut and the crank becomes weak.
I don't believe the cank broke because the forging was made in china.

This is a wing wong ching chong 4.25 crank with a crack that sizzled the main bearings out of a aluminum block nearly wrecking the line bore beyond repair and a made in USA crank I bought for its owner from Bullet Cams, as its replacement. They put 4-5 years on the made in USA crank since replacing the cracked wing wong crank, running 4.70's. Nesbitt just freshened it putting bigger intake valves, a bigger camshaft and punching it 565. It'll run 4.60's for many more years to come.

I told its owner when I did it, I wouldn't touch it if it we'rent a Made in USA crankshaft. Looks like he got his money worth.

It usually only costs twice as much to go first class.

I just bought another Callies Magnum direct from them along with pistons and rods, balanced...

Not cheap by any means but All American made and their cranks have always been excellent...

I have used Eagle cranks and rods and they held up fine....Biggest issue with them is finish size is poor....all over the place....

Don't weld on a crank unless it's a shop that does that work properly....with the right heat treatment after the repair....

No crank that was welded on ever held up in the long run done by local shops...

Grinding does require a radius done properly...if not you're also asking for trouble....


When you take apart a BB motor with a good crank with center counterweights the bearings look good usually.....A cheap China made crank, maybe not.....

The more grunt and rpm the more the thing flexes …..
