Drained oil from SBC race engine with 26 runs on oil and found this on magnetic drain plug.

It’s part of a c-clip, but from what?

Car ran same ET last time out for 7 runs.

My engines are built by an engine builder and I don’t have knowledge of all the components with c-clips.

by size I agree wrist pin. But hey checking rockers first is simple and avoid being pissed if found after taking motor apart and all 16 retainers on wrist pins are fine.

Most wrist pin clips are either spirolocks or round wire clips. Look at the rockers carefully.

That looks like an inner clip like would be used for a wrist pin. I have used sbc pistons with that type of snap ring. If you determine that it is from a piston, you will want to change them all. This type of clip is known to weaken a lot after a few compressions.

Like Gonzo said it's an internal ring. Don't know for sure where it came from but it's probably not from a rocker shaft.

It has JE Dome pistons 13.5 -1 / 4.125 for 23* head.

JE website says "Double Spiro locks"

Looking at pics on Jesel's web sight, the sportsman rockers use an internal c clip and the pro series use an external.

I would definitely start there if you have the sportsman series.

Thanks everyone. Yes I have Jesel Sportsman rockers. Makes sense. Thanks Tom

I’m in the middle of removing the engine now (3 day job, I’m old). Yesterday I picked up my brand new engine that is almost an exact match to this one. The new one has Crower shaft rockers.

judging by the size of it, I would say it's a clip from the top of a lifter. I don't know how one would break, but to me that's what it looks like. Let us know what you find.

It looks like an internal snap ring, what's left of it!

My Diamond pistons use double spiro locks. They work great, but a PITA to get back off!

Haven't seen that type of snap ring on a piston in a long time either. And you said your pistons use spiro locks, so now it's time to check those rockers!

That's type SHI or known as inverted external retaining clip for low profile applications. NOT internal. The ear profile is WRONG for internal.

I’ll have the engine out of the car sometime tomorrow, and the first thing is to remove the valve covers and inspect the Jesel sportsman rocker arms to see if I can find the other part of this c-clip. Stay tuned!

Good News. I found the #6 intake rocker with the remainder of the broken c-clip still in place. No damage and should be easy to replace in the event I need this engine back in the car. It’s getting rebuilt next winter.

Thanks to everyone for the help and advice. Mark
