DO NOT start in 1st gear !! You can start in 2nd and shift to 3rd if you desire. ME…. I always start in 3rd for over 13 yrs. I have 14x32 on the car.

If this is a recent Rossler trans with a brake, does it require you to activate the transbrake solenoid to back up? Try putting it in 2nd and activate the trans brake and see if the trans locks up….. it might have a 1+2 in it. A friend of mine bought a Rossler TH400 2 yrs ago and last year we discovered it had a 1+2 in it that he never knew. With his trans putting it in reverse only backs the car up without activating the TB solenoid.

You could just ask Rossler as he did build the trans or just read on his website.

One last word of caution. I’ll assume you have a Reverse Manual Valve Body installed. This is best because you Do Not want to neutral a TH400 at speed. They will explode.

There may be smarter people than me on here but I have been doing the 1st to 2nd burnout for over 40, yes 40, years and have yet to destroy a trans. Current one has been in car for about 13 years and 2 motors and I put lots of runs on it. 6.40 car.

Those of us without a full manual valvebody should just hope for the best? Fortunately, the best has been what I've gotten over the past 35 years myself. Take care. Tom Worthington

If it seems that bracket racing has gotten too expensive for you, maybe you are just doing it wrong.

Fern,
I always did 1 to 2 shifts in my cutlass when it was a 7.70-12.20 car, when I put together my new combination 6.60 - 10.50, the 1 to 2 shifts in the water box lasted 8 runs before it broke the sprag in the transmission. I now only do high gear burnouts

Makes me wonder about your converter, thats where the sprag is. I have never had anything but ATI built stuff so I don't know about anything else. My car right now, last week, is running around 6.45--48 and like I said I have always did the 1-2 burnout..converter is older than dirt.

Fern,
Actually in these TH400s they have a 16 or 34 Element Sprag in the trans to help the 1-2 shift. Apparently even the upgraded units do not handle a 1-2 burnout well. Not sure why some people can get away with it and some dont.

For those who use a reverse valve body. Why? What is the reason to reverse it?

If th400, the RVB is desired because you end up with the shift handle dead stopped at the end of travel in 3rd gear. You have to move back through 2nd and 1st to get to neutral.

With a FVB, 3rd ends up right behind of the neutral position, and the possibility of going from 3rd to neutral is much greater. If moving from 3rd to neutral at speed these transmissions will explode.

I believe they do offer th400 RVB that has a 2nd neutral position behind 3rd that are safe to move to neutral the transmission at full speed.

Mark,
I do understand how they are set up but didn't know why it is a big deal to be a forward version. I would have thought that there would be no difference in the possibility of hitting neutral in a 400 than a glide and you COULD if you wanted to neutral after a run without the clean neutral set up for a reverse. Just wondered, thanks for answering.

Curtis

I have been shifting mine from 1st to 2nd then 3rd manually during burnout, for over 30 years and have never broken a sprag. Sent back converter (twice) for freshening to ATI and they said that whatever you are doing , keep doing it.

Real easy if you're manually shifting with a Pro-Stick or similar to overshoot 3rd into neutral. If you want air or electric some shifters work better reversed.
As far as a sprag goes I know on T350's the sprag is a weak link and you don't want to come out of the burnout and let the tires grab in 2nd. From what I know T400's are similar.

OK, more details on the burn out I do. I put the slicks in the water, hit the line lock, spin them a little in 1st to get the tires wet, move forward out of water, hit the line lock once more, hit it in 1st and as soon as it hits about 5000 rpm pull it into 2nd, when it starts to pull the motor down I release the line lock and burn out toward the line. Usually hooks as I lift. 14in wide Hoosiers, 3000lb door car with an Olds motor. I have also used a 2 speed T 400 and did about the same except the final part was in 3rd. Its always worked this way for me and I had my first T400 in 1967.

So the shifters don't have a lockout to keep it from going into neutral like a glide shifter then? Such as the needs 2 hands type of lock out.

On a Pro Stick you have to hold the lever and it will stop but if you relax just the slightest it's easy to slip into neutral.
