350 SBC Bracket Build
Been thinking about building a 350 with Vortec heads and a hyd roller for my 1985 Camaro, looking for 10.60s ET. This would be a low buck build, flat top pistons, GM powered metal rods, factory cast one piece crank, ported Vortec heads with a 2.02 intake valve, Performer RPM intake with 235/242/ 110 hyd roller cam. I'd run a 950 Holley with a 1 inch open spacer. Pretty sure I can build this for around 2500.00 using Marketplace for my parts. Could be a interesting build.

You could meet that performance goal with a very light car. What weight do you have now?

The Camaro weighs 3165 total right now with a aluminum head 350, should be around 3200 with the iron head 350.

In my experience with the parts you have listed, your performance goal is unrealistic at that weight.

Thanks for the input. Here's my line of thought: The car runs high 10.80s now in 1700 DA conditions. My 350 now has 4 valve relief hyperutectic flattop pistons, 224/234/110 hyd roller with L98 Corvette heads, Performer RPM intake, 950 Holley. This engine made 441 HP @ 6300 RPM.

My son built this very same Vortec 350 above with 4 valve relief pistons, it made 464 HP. I think I can get 475 HP out of my version, and with the power peak average a couple of hundred RPMs higher than my current 350, which will be a much better combination with my drive line. I'm hoping that will get me into the 10.50s. I'm pretty sure my L98 350 combination will run 10.70s in better conditions?

Mark,
This what I get

1/4 Mile ET = 10.7233
1/4 Mile MPH = 123.6916

When I run these number through Larry Meaux Time Slip software @ 1700 foot DA it says 477.8 HP

Thanks Stan!

I think I think I can run a tenth quicker @ 123 MPH than 10.70s?

What do you get with my present L98 350?

10.89
120.2 MPH
3165
475 track elevation
1700 DA
441 corrected dyno HP, 415 observed HP @ 900 feet elevation

The new Vortec headed 350 should be 30 HP better, but more importantly the power moved up a bit.

Put it on methanol if you don't reach your goal on gas.

I never got the L98 to go better than 1.43 60. When I tested the engine it made 441 HP from 5600 RPM to 6300 RPM, so it peaked @ 5600 RPM but was the same HP to 6300 RPM.

To be clear, my car now has a 350 with hyp flattop pistons, stock crank, stock rods, 224/234/502/510/110 hyd roller, L98 Corvette heads, air gap intake, 950 Holley. 441 HP @ 5600-6300 RPM

10.89 1320
6.87 660
120.2 MPH
1.43 60

I WANT BUILD A Vortec headed 350 with light weight flattop pistons, stock, stock rods, 236/242/110 hyd roller, air gap intake 950 Holley in hopes of 475 HP and 10.60 ETs.

Mark,
Sorry I was using 470 peak HP, I changed that to 475 and also increased the torque curve so it hold that HP from 6000 to 6500.

60 Foot ET = 1.4158
330 Foot ET = 4.2428
1/8 Mile ET = 6.6982
1/8 Mile MPH = 99.3871
1000 Foot ET = 8.8415
1/4 Mile ET = 10.6572
1/4 Mile MPH = 124.5084

I think the L-98 heads are better than Vortecs.
I have a pair that were ported at Gianino's that ran within a tenth or so of a pair of Track 1 Brodix heads with a larger cam.
59cc chambers on the L-98's I think?
The bad deal with the L-98's are the self aligning rocker arms and center bolt rocker covers.

Biggest issue I found in my research on the vortecs, They crack. I found a cheap set local and guess what they had cracks. Going aftermarket Alum.

I get wanting to run stock parts, its cool tell it's not.
