polishing a slip yoke

Rob7181polishing a slip yoke
Have a Mark Williams yoke that measures 1.502 and need to polish it down to 1.499, has anyone done it? How did you do it? Would take one huge lathe to chuck the big end in.

1320racerwhat exactly is the issue that .003 needs to be removed and did you call Mark Williams to discuss the issue?

CURTIS REEDYou wouldn't have to chuck the big end. Just turn a taper to hold in the chuck and go in the splined area and use a flat end live center to hold it between them. Basically reversed between centers from what you described. I don't know what the Rockwell is of that, but if it's not too hard it shouldn't be a big deal.
With all that said is it a bushing you are trying to fit it to and if it's new have you contacted MW to see what they say about the size.

Curly1I believe the roller bearing on the Reid case is a little smaller than the factory style bushing. I ended up buying a new yoke when I got my new case.

jenavetI had the same problem, mw yoke and reids case with tailshaft bearing and it would not go in,i just emory cloth the heck out of it and with some trans fluid on the shaft it eventually slid right in. but it definitely took some polishing

OR you could put it on a lathe like I posted and make sure it's round when you are finished.
My way I could make a mandrel, indicate it in and hard turn it if I chose to. No reason not to do it right.

X2, shoestring, sandpaper and a lot of elbow grease!

X3. It was a hassle to figure out out to chuck it. So I went this way. Turned out fine and has ran for years like this.

EmanThis sounds familiar!!
I have a MW yoke that was too big and wouldn't slip in my tailhousing bushing. I posted on YB asking about dimensions. MW answered and had me call him, send the yoke in and they ground it to spec.

Rob7181Will check with a couple local machine shops to see if any can turn it down. Just want to make sure it’s stays true.

BJs Wild RideI had a pg input that needed a few thou removed. I c-clamped my 4 1/2 upside down on the work bench with an 80 grit flapper, took a couple practice swings, and got it just right on the first pass.

EmanMaybe yours is different, my local machine shop said it would have to be finish ground like a crank.

wideopen231MW does grind theres down if you tell them its for a bearing and not bushing. I had them do it when ordering.
My question is why the hell is there a difference ,especially .003?
