I have to say I've learned a lot the past couple years. Almost sold my 1.58's last winter. Backed out of the deal with the guy and decided to stay with it. Glad I did now. With this new tire I'm not afraid to add some gear. Will be real interesting.

Did it change the way the converter acted changing gears in trans? Did changing rear gears make the converter more efficient?

4.30's with a 585 n/a 4 link dragster.

Think it's a 1.80? Think again.

Transmission Specialties has a 1.64 holding up and going 154mph @3200 lbs on radials.

It's rated for 2200 hp. Best I've seen next to the Sonnax gearsets. Heavy duty.

put the 1.80 in and make sure you have some tunes in the GRID for those iffy track conditions.

this^^^

running a 1.58 in the OP's car is a waste of time, money and WILL run a tenth or more slower without running a lot more rear gear as Marco Abruzzi has told the OP.

FYI, the highest track temp we saw last season was 138 degrees on our way to an 8 round, $10K win in brutally HOT conditions and we launched every round with full power at the hit from our 1300HP 648 backed by a 1.80 1st gear glide, 4.30 rear gear and rolling on Hoosier's C1550 slicks

but we have a grid and have a tune IF we ever encounter a track we can't get off the starting line under full power at the hit.

save your money and of course changing either gear will affect the converter efficiancy

And for what it's worth. I wouldn't suggest the 1.58 either. There is a ton of learning curve. Depending on your combo, it could kill it ET wise. We have done a ton of testing in real world conditions. Converter, gear, timing, etc. Like I mentioned just decided to stick with it.

For the record we back to backed a 1.80 / 1.65 - 4.10 and it was .07 in the 1/8th with our combo. 1100hp, 8" converter at the time. So yes get ready for some ET loss with the loss of gear in the transmission if you make no other changes.

SL... enjoy

The TRUTH AND FACTS^^^

Again, it’s unanimous amongst those that actually race a “medium” dragster as well several that race a much quicker Top Dragster, the majority of which according to our self proclaimed, all knowing, wannabe heads up racer, resident retard are “know nothing, do nothing, monkey see monkey do, crate engine buying racers” that the OP should stay with a 1.80 as I stated on page 1 in my 1st reply as well he will lose a significant amount of ET if he chooses to run a 1.58

ED,
In the heat the OP is running 138 degree track temps after midnight, we typically run in the 150-165 track temp from May to September in the south and Texas type heat. A lot of difference between 135 and 155-165 track temp. That is why I said there is a lot of difference depending on where you run and also the track prep for different race tracks. The grid will help a lot in that area.

I still think the 1.80 is the way to go, I am actually going tighter on the convertor when everyone else is going to looser. Just a different way to skin a cat, we are putting our dial in on the board and it isn't about getting everything out of your combination; consistency wins !!

Will be interesting to see how the OP gets to the starting line ratio as the finish line ratio will not change unless the gear is changed, which will definitely raise the RPM.

Steve, as you said, nothing that the grid can’t compensate for IF after tuning his suspension to get down any track at any temp which I’m confident my car can which you have seen inaction.

But have you gone faster than everyone else on the planet, same combo? No.

Know how.

Would more first gear ratio be even faster? Maybe it is a moot point since higher ratios aren't available in the stronger lines I looked at.
