I think I read in the past lower compression engines will see a larger gain from gas then a high compression engine.

I have ran a motor on alcohol with 9.4 compression and it picked it up big time. In my opinion lower compression motors will see more of a gain than high compression motors. Do not know what minimum is but it is lower than 9.4 I know that.

-a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. This overestimation occurs as a result of the fact that they do not have enough knowledge to know they don't have enough knowledge.

Before you argue with someone ask yourself, "Is this person mentally mature enough to grasp the concept of a different perspective?" If not there is no point to argue.

I have heard of people running alcohol on 8:1 engine although I don't know why they would do so.

Cool, for some reason I was under the impression (maybe bad info) that you needed at least 12:1 to make alky work correctly. This is going to save me a few bucks. I think the new engine is going to come in somewhere around 11.1-11.2 but haven't finalized the numbers yet.

Cold weather starting is more of a challenge with lower compression (8.8-9.2).

Phil - it ain't real easy with 14.5:1 either - LOL!

Which I am now going to jump on my soapbox about. A few years back we took the Camaro to an early spring race in NC - now I am a NC boy so no disrespect here. It was cold Sunday morning and decided to take a little generator gas and dribble it in the carb to get her fired up. Well, she coughed, caught the cup on fire, burned my gloved hand and I dropped the cup which started a bit of a blaze. Between rags, fire extinguisher, jackets we got it out. Yes I was stupid - big time stupid but the other racers standing around just watching the inferno really pissed me off. And before you respond, if it happened to you - wouldn't you appreciate people jumping in and trying to help? I know if I see someone burning, I am not going to stand there and just watch.

I'm done.

We run a low compression boat 454 my guess is 8.8 to 1, in a hard tail and Phil is correct, its hard to start. the combo has its days, some days it prints tickets and on a different day same track its all over the place... I blame it on compression sometimes but am not sure..

Maybe so, but I have seen more movement in alky due to humidity changes than anything else. On a given day we can move a few numbers between time shots and race runs just with the %humidity number moving around.

Next time try using carburetor cleaner. You don't have to get close. Open the throttle plates, spray down inside, then a little on the plates and start. It will work if it's 15° or 50° just as safely. The really light fumes light easily and you can even spray a little more on the carb/throttle body if it starts to die. Easy Peasy.

Yep, that's what we normally do, but we had emptied what little we had in the spray can that morning which led to the other mess.

Thanks for the input.

I'm just glad you weren't seriously burned no matter what was used.

If you have WD40 try spraying it down the carb while cranking with the ignition off for 3- 4 seconds and then turn the ignition on and crank again. WD40 burns really well.

I couldn’t imagine trying to cold start my mfi engine without the primer plus system that it has.

My 540" alki engine never had a problem being started with the bird catcher and mech. injection with just a squirt of regular gasoline any time of the year. Only had to do it on the first start up and it was good for the rest of the day.

Minimum CR.
I can't decide if this is relevant to today or not.
Before WW2 while the depression was going on there have been stories of the model T being run on whatever might burn including kerosene, corn alcohol or the good stuff, moonshine.
Model T compression ratio? 4.5:1

The Military 5 Tons we had in our Artillery Unit in the early 70's were "multi-fuel" Meaning they could or were supposed to run on nearly anything combustible....They were mechanical injection but I'm not sure on the C/R...

When I went to alcohol in 1998 they said you have to have like 14 to 1, you have to change oil every week, you have to drain all fuel and lines and fill it with marvel mystery oil, and on and on.

Most of those are not true. I mean you certainly can change oil if you want every week..... Or you could just make sure you get it hot enough to evaporate the moisture out at end of the day.

Works very well on lower compression no matter what old wives tales says.
