In the process of building new BBC 496 & wondering what's your opinions with this cam & head combo since i already have the cam & heads. 1/8th mile bracket car @ 3300 pounds, 4 link car with 5.14 gear, 33x15x15s, glide with 1.76's. Stock 4 bolt 60 over with main studs, New Eagle 4.25 forged crankshaft & Eagle H beam rods with Icon 24cc dome pistons @ 0 deck 12-1 compression. The heads are very old (1990) Brodix big brodi rectangular port 119cc, 305 & flow 320 at 700 lift as I'm told by brodix. Cam that I have is a crane solid roller lift is 708/708, 262/272, 300/310 on a 108. Old combo 11-1 468 with 781 iron heads with 219/188 with a Herbert solid roller 685/685 lift, 260/270, 290/305 on a 106, FTI 5800 spragless converter & 950 alky QF went best mid 6.40's.

Don't expect a lot, couple of tenths maybe, but it should be a decent combination. Might be able to take some gear out of it, I think your heads and cam are going to be maxed out around 6500-6800 rpm. Might have to tighten the converter a tad, if the increased low end torque causes it to flash over 6400? "Despite the high cost of living, it remains popular." Dave Cook N375

Upon further review...with a .041" thick, 4.4" bore gasket and .010" deck clearance... http://users.erols.com/srweiss/calccr.htm Roughly calculated that is slightly under 10.5:1 compression. Did I miss something? Hope your running alky. "Despite the high cost of living, it remains popular." Dave Cook N375

After further discussion with builder, he's going to do some work on the short side of runners, Bowl blend & unshroud around the Valves & back cut.

What intake will you be using? What size carb? Which fuel? Keep us posted on how it works out. Cam seems a bit short on duration for the rest of the combo. Dan "Jim" Moore Much too young to feel this damn old!!

Elderbrock Victor jr intake, my current QF 950 alky carb. May try a ATM 1050 alky later on.

I do think it will run alright for you. Those 305 CC Big Brodie's were/are good heads for a bracket door car with your displacement. I also would go ahead and try it with that cam if you already have it. That somewhat short duration should go well with your intake port volume. Based on those 2 things, I think the combo will have excellent torque, and probably peak around 6500-6800 RPM. So you may want to look at tightening the stall and/or consider going with a slightly lower (numeric) rear gear, unless you are running strictly 1/8 mile. There is my $.02, I'm sure some may disagree. Put her together and see what you've got. If possible, I would definitely make time to try and test it with a 1050 carb, (meaning manifold change, not a big fan of carb adapters). If you have a Victor mani, (Dominator flange), or a buddy with one or something similar that would loan it to you, that would be helpful. Dan "Jim" Moore Much too young to feel this damn old!!

Icon piston IC993-60 Says at 0 deck & 41 thou gasket & 119cc head puts it at 12-1 compression. I think after surfacing the heads & cc ing them, there 118cc which should put at around 12-2-1 compression.

Keep in mind, with proper Camshaft choice, the dynamic (running) compression ratio on a race engine is usually higher than the calculated (static) compression ratio. Alcohol fuel will also raise the effective / dynamic compression ratio, because of the higher percentage of liquid fuel (which does not compress) in your air/fuel mixture. When I started racing my first engine was a 496. Brodix BB2 Extra CNC heads, 14.1, and Lunati .722/.722 camshaft on Gas. It was a great combo! I wish I had tried it on Alky. I think it would have liked it.

One of my cars still run that exact same combo...same Heads, same cam, slightly less compression for well over 10 yrs.1970 Nova at 3150 lbs starting line weight.....Average mid 5.80's at 116 High 5.70's in good air,0n 110 race fuel.....Good combo.....

I have a couple of them.....That particular one is a tall deck stock block..Brodix BB2 Heads..Lunati 50225 cam..Edelbrock intake..6.535 Long rods..SRP pistons...But the other one with standard length rods and Team G intake runs within a tenth,same heads and cam.....converter flashes 6200..Shift 7000..fall back 6200...Trap 7100.....1.80 powerglide...4.88's ..30in radials.....But my 505 with same cam,heads,454R intake,5.385 rods..same car and converter,have been high 60's..low 70's.at 119 to 120...
