Why do some people use a split A/C unit instead of rooftop?

Because mini splits are quiet and only draws about 2-3 amps verse roof unit being noisy and drawing 15 amps. Those were my reasons.

Steve, do the splits put out more airflow/btu's ? It looks like everybody mounts the splits on the front of the trailer, correct? I don't know where else you could mount one....on the roof?

The 120V Mr Cool unit I have is rated at 12000 BTU and cools better than the 15000 BTU roof unit I have. Yes most mount on the tongue of the trailer. I have a large tongue box and mounted mine on top of it. Very important to cover the unit if it is mounted up high as the wind driving down the HWY will cause the plastic fan blade to over speed and damage the unit.

The mini split is way more efficient and quieter that allows you to use a smaller and quieter generator which uses less fuel.
Also a mini split does a very good job of removing moisture from the air.
A good mini split is better in every way. Get the highest SEER you can and you will be glad you did.
Also a good mini split basically runs most all the time and it adjusts operating speed as needed so you do not hear it click on and load generator down. Slowly ramps up and down as needed. Nice when sleeping.

One thing to be aware of not sure if it makes and difference at all. Some are complaining about the wind going down the highway turning the fan backwards MAY hurt it or burn up motor. I am considering turning my outside unit backwards for that reason. In case I ever need to have air conditioning running while I am driving down the road.

I want to install a mini split systemin my trailer. Love to see some photos for those who have done it before

I installed a 12k BTU mini split this year. It is wonderful! Some of the best money I've ever spent! I bought a Pioneer. It looks like most brands are very similar.

Notes:
-It pulls 9 amps at full load, 120v. There is no inrush. The inverter starts everything slowly and smoothly
-It is very quiet
-A single Honda EU2000i generator will run it with ease. Can use trailer lights at the same time, inside and outside no problem. Most of my lighting is LED, but not all.
-In heat of summer it will cool great at night. It will freeze you out.
-It will run on a full tank of gas with the EU2000i for about 7 hours at night during the summer.
-It will keep the inside cool during the day after running at night. It will NOT cool the inside during the day once the inside is already hot.
-My trailer is 32' +1. Older Pace and it is well insulated.
-It includes heat which is very nice. I used it this past weekend.
-It is controlled from a remote control - all functions!
-The vent deflectors are automated from the remote control! Up/down and left/right.
-It was easy to install
-I followed the directions to vacuum out the line set and it lost the included charge. I did it exactly the way the instructions said to.
-Full charge is about 38 oz, R410A. I had to get some from a friend to recharge.
-Performance has been flawless.
-It's paid for itself at least two times over at this point.
-A larger unit would be ideal for daytime. Unfortunately, all larger units I could find are 240v. None of the inverter generators under about 6000w put out 240v. Basically, the only option for most is the 12,000BTU size due to these constraints.

There just aren't enough rednecks on here.



That baby will cool it down even if it's already hot. Only 10,000btu but this trailer is only 20' long. Window units are pretty efficient actually. I had it laying around and one day decided I was getting too old for the heat.

You know I could put one of those in my generator compartment and cut a hole in the side to stick the front vent through into the trailer inside...I always have the compartment door open anyway for the genny...brilliant!

There are quite a few good new choices for RV air conditioners these days, There are what they call under bench compact a/c units that...fit under benches etc, that exhaust thru hole in floor like pioneer and others make.

There are pancake compressors that mount flat on front or flat surfaces that are quite compact for space considerations.

Real good choices are the new efficient 12 volt units that some even come with their own batteries, perfect if you don't want to run a generator and if have a couple solar panels on roof to recharge them work great.

A lot of new good products out there, you can do a search on amazon to get a few ideas, then look elsewhere for additional products and better prices... lot of options

I saw a picture of one mounted in the generator compartment. He cut an opening in the bottom of the compartment to let the air out. Looked pretty slick.

Those seem to have the worst seer ratings though.

Well I don't know about Brilliance more like cheap. I paid $169 for this at Wal-Mart around 2008-10 or so. I stuck it in the trailer in 2013 I believe.

It does come with some caveats. I have to run a cover on it because if it rains when I'm on the road it will let road spray through it. Not a big deal because I keep a cover on it all the time anyway. Also don't leave the front of your trailer too high or rain can get through it into the trailer. Other than that it has worked so well I don't regret a thing about it.

Do remember to take the cover off when you start it up or it won't work well at all. Not that I have done that though. LOL

The SEER rating is very important. The higher the SEER rating the smaller (and quieter) generator you can use. Uses less gas and easier to carry around.
The largest, most efficient 110V I have found was 12,000 BTU, 25 SEER. Most everything bigger than that is 220V.
In my house / shop I currently have 7 of the 9,000 BTU 220V, 38 SEER high efficiency Mini Splits. Work great.
We put a 18,000 BTU mini split in the black trailer and it works good but requires a 220v generator and the smallest 220v generator I found at that time was 6250 watts.
I have a friend with a 12,000 mini split in his trailer and his Honda 2000 generator would run it with lights and all but when he ran compressor or battery charger it was too much. He went to a Honda 3000 mainly because it has a larger gas tank and can run longer on a tank of gas over his 2000.
On my White trailer I am going with the 12,000 BTU mini split and I have insulated the living quarters very good and the floor space is fairly small so it should cool it down even in Texas heat with no problems. (I hope!)
Like BRKTRACER said it is some of best money you can spend.

Blue light special. 169.00.. Not one problem. Older guys have to improvise.

I know a guy who did just that, Installed in generator cabinet. Hey it worked and can find them cheap. While might be Rednick engineering so was the first carbine rifle and by a prison inmate no less.

I have roof top and wish had gone with mini split.
