So, I'm getting a new transmission case/bell housing. Sending off my old one to get recertified costs almost as much as the purchase price of the new one on sale plus shipping.....and no reason not to upgrade anyway, so that's what i'm gonna do. Since I've had my dragster, my trans has been bare aluminum. My car is far from being a show car, but the trans looks like crap. So, with that in mind, I was thinking of either powder coating, painting, or hydro dipping my case....

Thoughts? Which one would you do? Why?

If I am correctly understanding, it seems obvious. If you simply buy a new one, at close to the same cost as freshening your old one... get the new one. That way, you end up with two transmissions, versus one. Take care. Tom Worthington

If it seems that bracket racing has gotten too expensive for you, maybe you are just doing it wrong.

Tom, I am getting the new case. Just can't decide if it should be painted, powder coated, or hydrodipped......

I am not sure but it seems that hydro dipping would be the least durable and not cover up much of anything on rougher parts of surface. With powder coating probably most durable and thickest coverage.

I will never have another chassis powder coated because you have to weld new brackets or what ever and it is hard to clean off and touch up to look nice after but for transmission case I think powder coating would be my choice.

Before you argue with someone ask yourself, "Is this person mentally mature enough to grasp the concept of a different perspective?" If not there is no point to argue.

Hydro dipping is paint with a decorative film applied. Both look really nice when done correctly but not very durable, a little brake clean overspray and its not so nice anymore, plus it scratches easy. I had my dash and the entire interior tunnel tin work hydro dipped in carbon fiber, looks really sharp and love the look but I have already scratched it.
That being said I have always powder coated my transmission cases

KISS. Why not a nice hammer-finish paint?

Mine is hydro-dipped, and it isn't perfect but I'm happy with how it has held up.

Anything is better than the rough aluminum finish that traps all the dirt.

I sanded one out almost to the point of polished. I then used a translucent spray can paint on it to give it a candy look. Held up and was simple to touch up if I got fumble fingered. Also a fan of hammer finish paint. The rustoleom gray always looks good.

Powder coat it and dont think about it. In the lower 48 average cost is under 250. I own a transmission shop, and can run the powdered cases through my 180 degree parts washer with "aluma soap" and not damaged ANY powdercoated case yet.
