This^^^. IMO I wouldn't have one on my car at gun point.JMO again. I have never liked idea of using them. I figure if I can control burnout in TA/D that can do 1/4 mile burnout with ease(except valvetrain) a bracket dragster should not be problem. I think it just takes the driver out of the picture more.

Do you floor it to get it spinning and then just have a feel for how far back to come on the throttle? Or do you use a different technique?

I definitely don't go full throttle. Maybe half? Between feel/ear/tach, it isn't too hard.

I don't use the line lock in my door car, so I essentially do the same procedure although I do go Low to High in that.

High gear about 1/2 throttle as well...it becomes a "feel it" thing and very routine.

I guess everyone leaves it on the converter.

You know that almost everyone does. That is a critical aspect for what we do. On the burnout, not so much.

People smarter than have said valvetrain harmonics that happen to line up with our RPM limit set point.

Consistent burnouts aren't important?

Look. Many many people today use a three step. If there was any agreement that it was harmful, it wouldn't be so common. Some say it hurts valve trane. Others puff out their chests and claim that they don't need em because they are that talented. But some of the same guys run the two step, and delay boxes, and even throttle stops in super classes and air shifters of course. And certainly some running boring rear engine dragsters. I don't know that use of any of these things is an indicator of a lack of talent. But rather an understanding that the fewer extra things a driver has to deal with, the more focus he can commit to safely winning rounds.

Do I feel like a "2-count" burnout on the chip would produce a statistically significantly different result than a "2-count" burnout with my foot? No, I do not. Unless you alter your burnout procedure with every change in air and/or track temperature, it's all pissing into the wind there. I've been shut off on the starting line for 10-15 minutes and not done another burnout. It doesn't matter.

I'm not saying that 3-steps are bad. I have a button hooked up, set at 6800. It's been used hundreds of times. IF that limiter happens to be set at a bad place for your engine, holding steady at that RPM is a very bad thing. I feel that I don't need to take that chance, so I don't do it.

Starting line chip at 4600...not more than a second...no sissy starting line enhancers either...

i have a 3 step turned on in my TS car, but i try to keep the RPM below it. i usually shoot for around 6900 give or take a couple RPM, i think the 3 step is set at 7100.

my philosophy is to keep it off the rev limiter as much as possible. Not that being on the rev limiter will hurt hurt the motor, but the less wear and tear the better and it's an unnecessary risk for me. the car is very consistent in the 60 fts.2 it's also why i don't deck it as soon as i'm fully staged, i wait until the tree starts down.

Question if using a 3 step for your burnout is it better to have a high setting or a lower one. Like 7100 or 4200.
Thx

As a general rule 4200 will not result in a sufficient burnout. The tires will grab almost immediately. Door cars with a line lock can have good results around 6000 rpm and above. Rolling burnouts like dragsters do, usually require around 6600 or more rpm.

Yes, switch to the Grid ignition and it’s even smoother
