Here's a perfect run, do you consider a perfect run a skill or luck?

IMO, a perfect run is luck! That being said, I'm jealous. I've been bracket racing 35 years & haven't got one.

I have one, I didn't call it either, I called it what it was, a win light. Mine didnt matter anyways because my opponent turned it red.

I did save it and put it in a picture frame and have it hanging on my wall Big Grin

I don’t believe in luck. Never have. We all intend to have a perfect run every time, so I can’t call it luck. It preparation meeting opportunity. That said perfection is really hard to attain, so you just don’t see it very often. .002 dead zero is as close as I’ve been. A perfect run is harder if you hold.

Curtis,

I don't set-up for a perfect run every time & have no intention of going .000 on the light. Bottom bulb/no box racing I'm looking for an .010 - .020 light. It has been some years since racing with a box/top bulb & I set-up; then I set-up for an .008 - .012 light. If I go back to the box in the future I would tighten that spread about .002.

As for holding, I always hold! I'm pretty sure, I get closer to my dial by doing it. Wink

I agree, it was LUCK! There was little to no skill involved taking that much stripe. She did do one quick rip before the stripe.

Now, the rest of the story. This is a young lady in her mid 20's with very little seat time in her car. I think this was her 1st time bracket racing. She ended up losing in the semis. She is being tutored by a member of this site & seems to be picking up on the sport pretty quickly.

This is our tracks off season (3 Months) & I like to watch YouTube videos of bracket racing. It's pretty interesting to see some of the trends & it's funny watching the shyt shows also.

Perfect package is nice and all but was real close to losing on both ends. I do not like to cut it that close or take that much stripe.

Skill wins rounds but sometimes it helps to get lucky.

-a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. This overestimation occurs as a result of the fact that they do not have enough knowledge to know they don't have enough knowledge.

Before you argue with someone ask yourself, "Is this person mentally mature enough to grasp the concept of a different perspective?" If not there is no point to argue.

Considering that the young lady who made that run was in her 2nd ever bracket race, let's call it luck....
BUT!!!
She did jack the throttle about 3 times to drop dead zero, so there is that.
She was dead zero twice, racing Pro 1/8th mile, and Sportsman 1/4 mile that day.

She's going to either do really well, or that was her best day ever, and she should stop. Laughing Hard

Don't see what Wideopen has to do with the question.....Does the multiple-answer question confuse you? Skill or Luck... what's your opinion?

the fact that very few people have made a perfect run in their life i would be inclined to call it luck. no skill involved.

i have made thousands of runs over 40 years and have 1 perfect lap. and it was in super street at Bristol of all things.

I have 1---at the million at Rockingham in 2000 and I LOST. Other guy was also perfect but that elusive 4th number for him was .0003 and I was .0009. Bret Kepner showed that ticket on his TV show and said it was the first time he had ever seen it side by side. I say its luck!

I have had 2. One in eliminations and one on a bogey run.

Edit: both were luck, did a piss poor job of red lighting then tried to run out

Wow, I wonder how many time that has happened in the history of the sport.

Some seem to be luckier than others, but the unofficial consensus is seeming to be its luck.

I'm gonna say pretty much EVERY perfect run is a combination of both skill AND luck.

A: (Luck) Definitely a factor. I don't know any driver/car combo that can intentionally go out and put a perfect run together on-demand. I think most of us shoot for "close to perfect", but allow some windage space so that our imperfections don't take us out of the competition, (or to allow for different race strategies, or variances in car, weather, track surface, etc).
B: (Skill) Gotta be a factor in at least 98-99% of perfect runs. It definitely takes SOME amount of skill to not only lay down a trip-zip at the tree, but then to complete the lap without any mistakes and hit your dial dead-zero, I don't think many can do all of that without a significant level of skill.

So I figure Skill gets you into the arena to play for a perfect run, where Luck then closes the deal.

Around 23 years ago when I hit it you saw very few 000 lights or 000 on your dial. I once got a T shirt for a perfect light in Indiana and another for running dead on at Norwalk. Not the lights, as I am now awful, but I can run dead on+ about anytime and have been dead zero 3 times in one race. Times and equipment have changed and in my case my skills have diminished significantly. But its still fun for me.

I was trip zip 3 off the bottom and lost the bye run, and thought I had bad luck, if I had a perfect package and lost I'd be sick. Fern that's rough.
