Are the new black 7AL3 boxes that much better than the old red boxes?

I'm about to find out, just replaced the red box with the new (7330) black one.

I have one that the launch circuit is bad no biggie just using the burnout insted, but if they are that much better just gonna go with the new box.

That’s what I’ve read here so it must be true. BlahBlah

That said, both my cars have black 7AL3 boxes.

Ed how many years have you had these boxes in your cars trouble free?

The Red 7al3 7230 ignition boxes were introduced in the mid 1990’s. They were discontinued in 2014-15.

The new Black 7al3 7330 ignition was introduced in early 2012. This MSD analog ignition can be found in many builds where racers choose MSD analog.

Hi Mark:

So what are the advantages of the 7330 over the 7230 ?

Besides the updated internal components including surface mount circuitry, the Start Retard now uses a Plug-In Degree Module. Otherwise, I believe same.

My red 7Al3 was 17 years old when I replaced it

It still worked fine with a Pro Power coil and was triggered by an MSD distributer

I went to all grid with a crank trigger after having just the Grid control connected to the red 7AL3 for 5 years

I had an event where my car lost 6-7 mph mysteriously...I checked the ignition a lot before I changed it out and really did not find anything there but decided to make some changes anyway

I like the grid and my car is back to running what it should be.....
