DRR Trophy |
Since the never happy racing association had a real problem filling pro classes last year I see they have now resorted to paying non competitive cars to show up and fill a field. I first surmised this a while back seeing names that were unfamiliar suddenly appearing on the national scene. During a conversation last weekend it was confirmed to me that at least one pro team was offered all expenses to be paid if they would just show up. Half empty bleachers tell the tale of fan participation. Last year at the 4 wide it was pretty evident. At the 4 wide it really looks bad with a short field, I say Bruton Smith kicked in on that too.

Companies do what they have to do to entertain the folks who paid for that entertainment. It's a business. Looks like they have a good spectator turnout as well. When everything is coming your way, your probably in the wrong lane.

sold out at epping is great. but their bleachers seat about 1/4 of what most modern tracks do. 6.41@221 (so far) 4.11@178 off the shelf/built it myself

Ya I was wondering about that watching the coverage. Looks like that facility needs a big shot of $$$$ for upgrades I'm kinda surprised the fat cats still race there? JB

SO is it JFR and DSR are ruining the sport or is it the paying of low buck teams to show is ruining it? I think its great they are trying to put on full show. This message has been edited. Last edited by: wideopen231, America home of free. Brought to you by 2nd amendment.

there is a big difference between a full show and a good show.

I wouldn't say that any of this is "ruining" it, true they need to fill the fields to justify the ticket price to John Spectator. Kinda interesting how it's come full circle for all the "leakers" that were beaten down and run off, are now being courted to return and fill the show. JB

Interesting question, but I don't think either team is "ruining the sport" I think it is a change in demographics maybe, or just the expense to the consumer? Used to be, a handful of fuel cars would pack the stands. Not so much any more. Is it too expensive as a spectator, maybe, is it not people's cup of tea any more, maybe. I cant answer that. But I think it is a change in spectators over the years that is what we are seeing now. As far as the competitiveness of the sport. Across the board in the top three classes, the drive to win, has led deep pocket people to take advantage of their unlimited budgets. Could they have limited things ages ago so the various smaller teams could compete on an even level? Maybe. Would that have made any difference in how many watch? That is a question that can never be answered. Would anyone in the stands really want to see the fuel classes backed down to a single pump single mag running 250 - 260? I doubt it but who knows. Is it worth taking that chance to see if it increases competitiveness and bring more small teams back? Dunno.

We have the people on Facebook who hate Trump finding anything and everything they can to ***** about, and now on DRR the people who hate NHRA doing the same thing. I guess that's just the new rave these days, if you don't like something, instead of just moving on, make a career out of bashing it? Get a life and enjoy your day people! It's not what you've got, it's what you give, it's not the life you choose, it's the life you live.

The only non competitive car that exists in drag racing is one that isn't there. Yes,it would take a miracle for some of those cars to win,but it CAN happen.

Not really a question.Just pointing out that on site point of view is. Two mega trams are ruining sport and then when small teams get paid to show up and run then thats bad. Just found it ironic. America home of free. Brought to you by 2nd amendment.

It's NHRA's sand box, if you don't like them or the teams then don't race with NHRA. Simple, if you don't have something nice to say ......then don't say anything. If NHRA wasn't formed 60 plus years ago organized drag racing in general wouldn't be around or this site for that matter. When everything is coming your way, your probably in the wrong lane.

Thank god for Force, Schumacher, Torrance and any other teams that are still racing and enjoying our sport. Pretty sure the bigger teams are still helping the independent teams step up. Pro Stock does this too. I’m sure if you ask the independant teams that receive help to race... they are most gracious! It’s great for the fans and the sport! Investing in its future. Man I don't care how the smaller teams get there. I like seeing pairs run not singles. Also I like the fact that the new track prep has given the lower HP cars a chance to win. I know the Top classes are about brute HP but that ends up giving you 10 car shows. Does NHRA still limit the fuel teams on running independent shows as having to be counted as test sessions? If so I think they should relax that so the small teams can make some money running open shows. May be too little too late for that though. I'm not a hater of NHRA but I always thought they messed up when they made that rule. Atlanta has been selling out as well. Selling out on Saturdays actually, as opposed to Sunday, although they have had good crowds on Sunday too the last couple of years. Mike

Slow the fuel cars down and put them back on the full 1/4 mile. Bet it would work fine. Pro Stock needs a way to somehow more closely resemble the street-driven version of the bodies. Mike

NHRA national events are still the top tier of drag racing. I'm not in a bad mood, I just look that way.........
