Ice Pack Cooling Vests

If so that vest I never used in the car because if I had something holding it against me even through a t-shirt it would get too cold right where the packs are. It might not bother someone else but it did me. I just wore it when I wasn't in the car. The coolshirt brand I do wear in the car.

I used two different types of cool vests.

One is a Diest that uses ice packs that I keep in the freezer in my motor home. I keep several spare packets so I can rotate them between rounds.

The second is the granulated packet type that is activated by placing the vest in a bucket of water (warm or cold, doesn't matter) for about 10 minutes then hang it out to dry for another ten to fifteen minutes. As the graduals dry they expand and become cold. This type works best if you keep your jacket on to contain the cold feeling they produce.

Both work well and are inexpensive. If I was to rate them they would be six of one, and a half dozen of the other. I believe that I paid $60 for the granulated vest and about the same for the Diest ice packet type.

I've had both for more than 30 years.

Yes I messed up the post. Thx for feedback. I'm toying around with trying something to keep me cooler as I age a bit. The heavier suit and the heavier me are working against me. I don't want to invest a bunch of money into something I may not take to though.

I bought a Kool Vest last year. Tried it some while not racing and found it to be ok for about 30 minutes or so and then useless. Did not get to try it in car during any hot days mainly due to panic-a- demic crap, you know we are all so close in a race car built for one. Nothing like being on golf coarse. Might last long enough to get you thru around, doubt its worth hassle with limited effect it has.

Would not check the would recommend to a friend box for it.

Mine worked good in my door car I have a insulin pump and sensor that fall off when I sweat real bad in door car would wear shirt and freeze a poland spring water bottle and put that in bag with the water

Somewhat related, I just got my new Sparco -5 pants from Biondo, WOW what an improvement over my older Simpson pants. Fit like a glove, much lighter and far easier to move around, huge improvement.

Sorry about the subject change, super impressed. Now, back to your regularly scheduled subject. Kool vests.

I got the glaciertek one, phase change packs. Best money I've ever spent. When I was in Florida, I just couldn't deal with the heat and humidity. With the vest on, I was still warm, but could sit in the car suited up without issue. I wore it mowing my lawn and everything...made all the difference in the world for me.

Perhaps it's just my body chemistry but the best way for me to stay cool on extremely hot days is to cool my head and neck. If a guy could figure out a way to install a cooling system in his helmet it might be the best answer by having the feeling of being cool. The issue might be that the Tech Inspection might not allow you to install anything inside the Sfi rated helmet.

I wear a "cool" towel around my neck that my wife bought for me, this thing really helps. It's like a long thin scarf about three inches wide that you soak in water for a few minutes then shake/snap and allow it to air dry. This really made a big difference so I bought a second one that allows me to exchange them on hot days.

My pet peeve is:
getting fully suited up (jacket)
five point safety harness on
helmet on
HANS device on
arm restraints on
gloves on
car started

Then have the track worker switches lanes and leave you sitting there, cooking . That guy should be told what it's like to deal with getting all the safety gear back on a second time, maybe he knows and is having some

fun messing with you.

You then have to go through the entire process as the guys is rushing you to hurry up!

I can sit in my car in 95° weather suited up an waiting for about 10 minutes plus the run and not sweat with my Coolshirt vest. They just aren't cheap.

I found a company that makes a balaclava (head sock) that uses the same cooling technology found in several of the cool vests. Walmart sells them, (imagine that), for $24.99.

They are also available from Non Zero Gravity in six colors, same price $24.99.
