CURTIS REED??? about Fresno for Cali peeps. Bob, 758BP, whoever
So I have never been to California and my Son in Law has taken the job as the new Chief of Police in Fresno. What kind of place is Fresno? My daughter and he have 3 kids under 10yo and I am concerned about them moving out there.
He has been serving as Deputy Chief in OKC but because his brother is also on the force he can't move any higher.
Thought I might get some insight from people who actually live in the state. Thanks for any information you can offer.

Big SteveI believe Fresno is a farming city. I am sure it is way better then LA but still has the Calif government and cost of living. Hope he is getting a giant raise because he will need it.

About 10 years ago I was offered a company transfer to go back to SoCal, anywhere in San Diego area to be exact. I did a online cost of living comparison with San Diego county and Tarrant county Ft Worth area where I live. I would have to make $48K a year more to have the same cost of living as I do in TX. The pay increase was nowhere near $48K so I stayed put. And with the current crap going on in Calif it was a great decision.

fivecentcharlieIt has tried to outgrow it's "farm town" image over the last decade or so, but it is still the biggest city in the San Joaquin Valley (population 550,000), so ag is ever present. By and large, it's like any big city, it has its issues, drugs, gangs, homelessness, etc, but it's also a million people +/- in the metro area. There are a lot of new houses going up along with a growing downtown scene. As a chief, I have to assume your son will be making mid-six figures, so it's not like he will be living in squalor anywhere.

Thanks for you thoughts. I had looked and it shows just over 530,000 population which is roughly 120,000 less than shown for OKC.
Speaking of new housing they are going to have a new one built so my daughter won't be going out until that is done. He starts the first of January.

Larry ScarthGets hot in the summer. Has 7 lakes in the So. Cal Edison project. Great water skiing, fishing, boating, Etc. High sales tax, we pay 10 1/4% in So. Cal. Definitely a farm town, lots of grapes.
When everything is coming your way, your probably in the wrong lane.

BP758Fresno stays pretty busy. I have some close connections local. I’ll ask. There are a bunch of racers there too.

RPROGASOn the plus side, they don't get a lot of snow. The last blizzard to hit Fresno was back around '98, all 1/2 inch of it. Backed up traffic for several feet.
They will like Fresno, great place to raise a Family. Like Barry and Larry said, lots of racers live in the area, Gary Scelzi is one of them.

fivecentcharlieI see that the former Fresno chief is going to be next mayor of the city, so at least your son-in-law will have a presumed ally in charge (or at least one who knows the challenges).

RPROGASMy son Brian (who travels there frequently for business) said that the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) now runs from the Bay Area down to Fresno. He also said that Fresno is becoming a center for a lot of "Tech" folks working from home. That has increased the cost of housing in the area, and to some degree changed the culture. There are a lot of Indian (Dot not feathers) folks moving there so Spanish isn't the only language being spoken.
