Most people I know could care less about NASCAR and the CHASE anymore. They have screwed it up so much by constantly changing rules and phony cautions to make it possible for some one to only run a little more than half a year and still win a championship. Lucky dog and free passes to get back on lead lap after you screw up is just wrong also. When they get back to real racing, real qualifying, maybe I will spend money on it but probably not
This is the first year in over 30 that I have not watched a single lap of any Nascar race. And I haven't missed it one bit. The sport did change after #3 was killed, and I miss guys like Bill Elliott who actually worked on their own cars, and who usually knew exactly what info they needed to give their crew chief to fix an problem. I miss the Good Ol' Boys, who most had more genuine charm in their interviews than the highly polished corporate spokesmen we have now. Not taking anything away from guys like Johnson, who proved with 5 straight titles that he is every bit the badazz racer that the best of the best would certainly agree. I will admit KB has a ton of talent, but sorry, there is nothing likeable about the guy to me. Multiplied x10 because he drives a freaking toy car. (I will never root for anyone in one of those camry's - Only a minivan driver could like that stuff). It is just a completely different sport, popular with mostly a completely different fan base these days. The closest thing to a throwback driver out there (actually 2), are Dale Jr & Clint Bowyer, imho. About 10 years or so back, SPEED channel had a show called Back In The Day, hosted by Jr. They showed some classic battles from the 60's & 70's. Bias ply tires, cars sideways every turn, rough & tough men like Cale Yarbrough, Junior Johnson, Bobby Allison, David Pearson, Petty, etc. That was some real racing. No splitters, computers, roof flaps, restrictor plates, etc. Not saying we don't need some of that for safety, but wow it was so much cooler to see.
