In general most slow cranking issues on 12 volts are due to not a large enough wire to the starter or insufficient grounds causing too much voltage drop between the battery and starter. 16 volts is a bandaid for this.
It also appears as though 12v might give more of a warning when it’s getting depleted - a slow crank, but it still might start it one more time. Guys that I’ve seen had a 16v go dead go from happily cranking to dead without much warning.
This /\ I think the 16 / 12 volt deal is kind of like a 10 speed bicycle. If you are on flat ground the higher gear will go faster but if you get tired or up hill you do not have the power to get going. I have ran both and the 12 volt system has never let me down in the later rounds and 16 volt has. I also agree with several others here, keep battery on a trickle charger all the time and run an alternator no matter if you run 12 or 16 volt.

RPROGASJust an observation that was an advantage with a 16 volt system.
My process for starting the engine changed when I converted from a 12 volt system to 16 volts. When I used 2, 12 volt Red Top batteries I would hit the starter first, get the engine spinning as fast as possible then hit the ignition.
That changed when I installed the single (as in only 1) XS D1600. I
first activate the ignition
then crank the engine. It wasn't necessary to spin the engine as fast as possible then engage the ignition, it fires immediately, so in effect I am engaging the starter for a much shorter time period. The single battery also reduced the car weight by 43 pounds.
