Trailer with living quarters

Trailer with living quarters
Hello all,

Looking at getting a 5th wheel trailer with living quarters in the 44-48 foot range, triple axle. I live in texas.

Couple questions:

Can you register it as an RV?

Can you finance it with an RV loan?

What do they typically weigh?

Any features that are must have?

Any features to stay away from?

Anyone get a class B, non commerical?

Other considerations?

Just trying to do my homework.

I've never had a LQ trailer, but the one thing I can say is a Class B license would do absolutely no good for you. You aren't going to have a trailer that size with GVWR less than 10K lbs.

You can go with the regular license and try to pass off the RV exemption, or a Class A would properly license you to pull that trailer.

I know I'm not in Texas, but my Maryland Non-Commercial "B" says : Non Commercial vehicles and combinations weighing 26001/more pounds GVW, EXCEPT class F tractors towing class G trailers. For what it's worth. And as this has been discussed on here several times, depends what state and what cop!

U need a class A for a trailer with 3 axles. I assume the axles are 3500 lb.. anything over 10,000 lbs. doesn't make any difference if the trailer weighs less than 10,000 loaded or not......You will get a ticket for not having a class A license. A "B" license is for air brakes etc. The ticket would be a "fix it" ticket so you can always get a class A later.

We just switched from a 48 LQ to a motorhome and tag

We had a Vintage 48 LQ
It weighed approx. 12,000 empty
Approx 17,000 with dragster, golf cart, tools, junk, etc.

GMC crew cab dually
Actual combined weight approx. 28,000, and that was actual scale weight. Tongue was approx. 5,000.

In TX you will need at least a Class A NON-CDL
because most likely you will be over 26,000 rated weight, that is total combined rated weight.

I would not do it without a dually, some get away with single tire, but not a good way to go.

It does not matter how you register it, it is what it is, there is no automatic formula to get you into a category of not needing a license upgrade, assuming you are not using this as a farm trailer. LOL

As far as a loan, if you have great credit and a down payment, you should be able to get a credit union to finance it.

Bob Rezner in Duncan, OK sells LQs, both new and used, I know he has sources for loans.

We bought ours from Bob, used it for 8 years, just wanted a MH for other uses.

We had the 48, 28 garage and 20 LQ. It worked great.

Larry, we towed all over with this 38" gooseneck with 3 axles and never got looked at once.

The 44' goose from Cargo Mate as well as others works very well, the bed is over the goose and there is a bath/shower/sink just behind the goose. I loved mine, it had the convenience of a full LQ trailer without the cost. Rich Moline can fix you up, he's perfected this build. And you can pick it up in Waco.

Yup, popcorn man. It's the law but very very few cops know anything about RV's or trailers. If you go over the scales that might be a different story though. I got a class A CDL years ago after getting busted south bound on the 5 at Merced. Rig was to long and he gave me 2 tickets. One was a fix it and the other was maybe a $100 fine.

I believe what you are referring to is called a bathroom package trailer, there is no separate living quarters and cargo area. They work well as long as you leave your racecar outside at the track overnight, otherwise you have to share your living/sleeping space with the car. The upside is you will have more room inside than with a separate LQ trailer with the car out of the trailer. I've had both and prefer the bathroom package.

Mine is also doable with the car in the trailer for two or three people, but space is at a premium with three people.

If I was you I would look into getting a good used diesel pusher motor home and keep your current trailer. There are several benefits to that. The motor home tows better, quieter, more comfortable and just has more of the comforts of home than a living quarters trailer.
I to was considering a living quarters trailer and after looking at my options decided the motor home is a much better option. I posted a thread here a few months ago about buying motor home and there was many responses that were helpful in what to look for etc.

There advantages to both, with a motorhome if you have or want to go into town from the track you are stuck with having to use the motorhome for that, it can be a hassle. If you have a dually it's much easier to get around if you run into town. Also it can be a daily driver when you're not racing and you have a truck to use when you need it. In my case I also use it to tow my boat and all the other things you do with a pick up.

That being said, a motorhome is a nicer and more roomy way to stay at the track.

Pick which one best suits your needs.
