Twice I have looked at purchasing a track. I have been a business owner before. Quick napkin running of numbers made those conversations quite short. When I hear people looking at balloon loans that simply allow for carrying debt on the purchase forever, I can see right away that this makes no sense. Having owned a commercial printing operation in the past, I know a little something about competing in a shrinking market. Taking a quick look at a p&l, and the risk involved with weather related events that the track is completely reliant upon, I have twice used the phrase "out of your mind" to describe being involved.

Just to add something to this discussion, look at who owns some of the remaining prime Drag Racing properties in the Country, SMI and NASCAR.

Together they own:

Sonoma - SMI Owned
Bristol - SMI Owned
Las Vegas -SMI Owned
Charlotte -SMI Owned
Atlanta - SMI Owned

Route 66 - NASCAR Owned
Fontana - NASCAR Owned

If The NHRA was to sell, and that's a possibility it might be of interest to SMI and/or NASCAR, maybe, make that a big maybe.

This is a poor time to own or consider buying a Drag strip.

Bob

All that said: The fact that I wouldn't own a drag strip right now, doesn't exclude me from offering up my opinion when a track seems to be running racers off dozen at a time. I'm still a customer, and want to have a track to be a customer at.

To those of you who have been to 75-80 Dragway, look at those pictures and tell me that doesn't remind you of 75-80. Take care. Tom Worthington

If it seems that bracket racing has gotten too expensive for you, maybe you are just doing it wrong.

Incorrect - Atlanta Dragway is owned by the NHRA, not SMI. They are two entirely separate properties. It's at least 100 miles from Atlanta Motor Speedway, which is owned by SMI, to Atlanta Dragway.

That's one of those tracks that very few realistic people think they could run better. I have stayed the night there, and on Sunday the track owner is out there at 6:30 prepping the track by himself. He thanks everyone he sees for coming. And this is a side gig from his regular business.

A local Atlanta Racer told me that the Atlanta Motor Speedway run 1/8th mile races on the Speedway track.

Is that accurate Mike?

I feel like I've read that track is only 600' (not including the shutdown), can't recall and looks like their website was taken over by another business. Either way, looks like a money pit prime for a housing development.

Atlanta Motor Speedway has a Friday night drags on pit lane . All heads up classes with varying rules like big or small tire . They also do a car show and cruise around the track that you can pay to do . No connection to Atlanta Dragway at all.

Which is why I never mention the Atlanta Dragway, only Atlanta, as in the SMI owned Atlanta Motor Speedway where they do hold 1/8th mile drag race events.

SMI has no connection the Atlanta Dragway, with all due respect I never said, nor indicated that it did.
