I just saw this on FB. I am guessing the second time the stage lit started the timer? Surely the first was too short?

The first started the timer. You can back out to prestage if your opponent hasn't staged yet. So the first car staged long enough (about .6 seconds) to stage lock and start the timer, then backed out since his opponent hadn't yet staged. But the 7-10 second stage timer had started.
Both cars would have timed out if the first car hadn't gone back in. Which obviously he did this on purpose.
That's why it's important to understand how the timing system works

Johnny didn't back out. All it takes is a wiggle of the front tires to turn the stage lights off. Look close and you will see the tires turn back and forth. Not his first rodeo. He is known for doing this if autostart is in use.

This was happening quite a bit years ago at a track I run and the track put a stop to it, they tossed the driver doing it I believe.

Rusty I agree, but at the moment what he did is not illegal. He was using the timing system and his understanding of how it works to gain an advantage. I still think it's chicken****.

Been done by many since autostart was implemented. There was no trickery, all that have a clue knew exactly what he was doing. It’s gamesmanship and if you don’t know how autostart works after about 15 years in use, my advice is stay home.

Last movement to stage was not forward......turning the steering pulling the fronts out of the beams is not a movement forward....

Johnny's last motion was forward, he only turned the wheel to activate auto start. Once he felt the timer was close he made his last bump in, which was forward. He followed the rules as they are written, nothing illegal about it whether everyone agrees with it or not.

I believe it would be up to track official to determined whether it is ok or not. I know of two tracks that put a stop to that game.

actually if the other guy would have quick staged after the flicker her would have got the other car redlight for backing out. had it happen to me in supercomp, both were prestaged the other guy flickered so i quick staged, he got the red for backing out.
