Results of the CARS Protection Plus 660 Top Bulb Nationals:
The schedule was condensed into 2 days, with the purse increased to $22,500 to win Saturday and Sunday. 233 cars staged first round on a sunny, warm day. After the time trial came the dial for dollars round, with multiple drivers going dead on the dial. Kyle Beno picked up $700 for going right on the dial with a zero and a 1. After 6 rounds were completed, it was time to go the ladder for the quarterfinals. With 6 cars left, 3 were door cars, and 3 were dragsters. The first pair out were the dragsters of Blase Raia, owned by Matt Obertanec, and Jeff Serra wheeling Rob Berschneider's. Blase, dialed 4.93, leaves first with an .0115 reaction time, and Jeff, dialed 4.88, is a tick better with a .0088. Throttle cables are getting stretched and contracted in both lanes, but the win light goes on for Jeff, with a MOV of .0000! Next pair was Brian Vollman in his Mustang dialed 6.18, chased by Hunter Patton in his dragster dialed 4.59. Brian is a little late on the let go with a .0368, and Hunter is in control with a .0092. Something happens to Brian's Mustang and he has to lift, running 5 tenths off and advancing Hunter. The last pair of the round was KRP's own Mark Romeo in his /70 Nova dialed 6.54 against Dennis Meade's 3rd generation Camaro dialed 5.90. Mark is out of the gate with a .0130 bulb, Dennis matches with a .0127 on his side. Both cars are wide open at the stripe, Mark goes right on the dial, 6.5408 for a .0135 package, leaving Dennis all of .0008 to get in on. Dennis takes the stripe by .0017, but breaks out by .0009 to send Mark to the semifinals. Jeff had the bye in the semis, making a full pull, .004 under his 4.88 prediction. Squaring off to see who would face him in the final was Mark's Nova and Hunter's dragster. Mark gets away with a .0301 light when Hunter is too quick with a .0040 red light. In the final, Mark's finger is stuck to the button, to use Skeet Peaco's line, but Jeff's isn't, .0021 and on a rail down the left lane after the Nova. Jeff goes right on his 4.88 dial with, a .009 package to pick up the big check!

Sunday, July 26. 227 entries answered the first round call on a hot, sunny day. The ladder round had 5 cars, with multi time event winner Justin Vickers taking the bye in his Nova. Dennis Meade was in the mix again, this time with his dragster, chasing after Tyler Rudolph. Tyler is . 0220 on his side, and a winner when Dennis is .0056 red. Tyler lifts and coast after seeing his win light, Dennis running it out to be .0009 under his 4.74 dial. Chris Bear in his S10 paired up with Mia Tedesco in her shorty dragster. Chris, another multi event winner here, is simply in the way of Mia, who goes .0002 on the tree, 4.7337 on a 4.73 dial for a .0039 package. Justin makes a strong parade lap with the bye, .0030, 6.7269 on a 6.72 dial for a .0099 package. Not surprisingly, Mia's trip zip earns her the bye in the semis, and a trip into the final. In the door car versus dragster, Justin is solid with an .0113 reaction time, and takes the stripe by .021 for the win, Tyler a bit tardy, dead on 4.8877 ET, and mathematically ineligible to the Nova's .0363 package. Mia takes a 330' rip, hitting the tree with a .0072 to pick up lane choice for the final. Justin is solid on the leave with a .0146, but Mia keeps swinging the lumberjack's axe, .0020, and rockets after the Nova. Justin dips under .002, but it didn't matter. Mia goes 4.7316 on her 4.73 dial for a .0036 package. Mia takes home the big check from the same track where she got her start in junior dragsters!
