I know cams can be re ground. But is a used cam with a damaged lob worth anything?

Years ago I had a lobe on a big block Chevy roller cam welded then re-ground. I ran it for a while then sold it to a friend who knew it had been repaired. That cam is still rollin' along today.

Note: It depends on the extent of the damage, the cam material and the welding process, but yes they can be repaired. Just be aware, if they grind much off the base circle you might want to re-check the rocker arm / valve stem geometry again.

I shipped a "slightly damaged cam" in one time to see if it could be reground. I wasted my money on freight.

I recently had a solid roller reground by Bullet. Slight abnormal wear due to insufficient open pressure. Talked to tech prior to shipping, was told regrind was $ 150.00, new cam $ 450.00, said the core's are worth $300.00 if abnormal wear is not excessive. No welding was necessary. Worked for me.

Did they mention anything about the pre and post grinding lobe hardness?

Thast the 64k question. I recently lost a lobe on a bullet regrind. We think maybe the regrind got past the heat treat maybe. It will be on its way back to them soon to look at. Im not complaining just asking

I have several cams that have been hurt. All were good cams that made power. I have tossed around the idea of either regrind or have them welded up and re grind. But the question of durability after wards is in my mind.
I don't understand why they could not be re hardened after the repairs.
Has anyone considered or have thought of nitriding after a repair? I have had crankshafts nitrided in the past, especially cast cranks.
Here is an article explaining the process and what they have been using it on.

Comp Cams Nitriding

And here is an idea of the costs ,

Nitriding and repair cost

What I have been told by folks in the Cam Business is that some cores have become very difficult to find. Recently I tried to find a AMC 287/327 core and a BBC with the LS firing order, I drew a blank on both.

Repairing the BBC might be the only current option.

Mark is the go to tech adviser at Bullet, I'm sure he can answer all your questions.
