Bracket Talk
Helmet to roll bar minimum.

inferno camaroHelmet to roll bar minimum.
When setting in the car how much would be the minimum for the roll bar to be above the helmet?
Mine has always seemed kind of tight but never actually measured it. My old age has me thinking safety more than ever.

RPROGASThree inches.
However, I've never seen it enforced nor checked during a Tech inspection.

inferno camaroOk thanks, I'll do some measuring. I'm not as much worried about tech as my old melon at this point

GoobThe tech part is the ANY portion of the roll bar / cage that can contact your helmet while you are belted in, must be padded with the 45.x approved padding.

Michael BeardAt a tech seminar many eons ago, someone asked, "Where should I put roll bar padding?"
"Go sit in your car and flail your head, arms, and legs around. Anywhere you get a bruise, put padding."

inferno camaroI have SFI padding all around my head, I'm more worried about possibly not having enough room over my head. SFI

The key point is to remain in the seat, retaining the position of your pelvis is number one.
A properly mounted and utilized restraint system will do that.
Arms and legs will get beaten up, but your torso and head will be safe.
I wear a Snell SA rated open face helmet, because I don't care if my ugly azz face get burnt, but I got good hair.

Curly1I to have SFI padding all around my helmet area. I am not impressed with it, that stuff is hard as a rock and brittle. Tried several different brands and they all stink. Some worse than others but they all were terrible. I would prefer something softer but those are not SFI approved.

Curly1I like to have several inches of clearance away from my head on top and I also tighten heck out of my belts.

"Soft" doesn't provide the impact absorption you need. Swing that helmet with a 12# weight in it against the soft pad, then the SFI pad.
My helmet cannot reach any bar with my neck attached. Just lucky in the setup I guess.

I agree. Seems like somewhere between old style and the sfi stuff would provide better protection.
3" above I don't think I have ever had in even the most generous cages.

I thought the cage had to be only a certain distance from you in the car? I would think that could be really hard on the neck unless you have a restraint system for your hair.

Yes, I used the junk to try to be legal but I am not impressed with the junk. It is hard and brittle so you can heat it or what ever but it really does not bend well with out breaking.

I used a heat gun (hair dryer) to soften the padding.

I did the same thing and used Jaz brand padding. It shaped well and hasn't cracked at all.

We did that with the jr size for my son's car. Most of it still cracked in that case.
