I thought we could have a discussion and post up cool or unique tools we have found or purchased. Eastwood has a nice little vice with multi use jaws on it for a good price. I have one on the way.

Here is a cool tool I bought from Dave Koelher. A tool I have said I would make on the mill but never got around to it. When drilling out a crankshaft counter weight for balancing purpose it can be a challenge to get the drill centered perfectly to allow maximum drill diameter in the counter weight. Works great and was very reasonable at $20.00

Nice. It reminds me of the tools to drill wooden dowel holes on center with.

Wow, there are still some Ed cling-ons hanging around. Most of you departed DRR when he did, glad you have the commitment to hang in there!

Ed used & promoted some China/chink products on DRR. Plus, he used & promoted plenty of non-US products, that could have been US made.

We kept him inline & he got exactly what he deserved; booted from DRR & the many other forums.

Keep on clinging, BJ.

Is it our fault America ( Mac, Snap on, Stanley, craftsman etc) chose to offshore parts? No! Doesn’t stop there! Virtually everything is offshore. Some really good and some really bad.
Yesterday we just had a hard look at the Speedmaster oval port heads. This set passed the vac port test..the last did not.
Also removed springs to check rates and take a look. No less than 6- .026 shims stacked up! No spring locators what so ever. We installed locators and seals. Guess we’ll see

Begs the question;
Do you really know who’s making your parts?

China. Lets have an honest talk about it. China sold little if anything at all in the World and was barely making it until 1994. That is when Bill Clinton forced Congress to give China "Most Favored Trade Status" and since that day China has grown and taken our jobs every day.
Bill Clinton and Loral Missiles also gave China the technology for guided missiles against the advice of his own Cabinet. It was supposed to be only used for launching rockets for satellites but fact is it is the same for guided missiles.

China has become most powerful Country in the World because of Bill Clinton. Something else, China is investing TRILLIONS in Africa, South America and even right here in America buying land and businesses and political power. 30 years ago America ruled the World. Now these other Countries are supported by China and America does not have same Global power we did before.

Some people think China can build them cheaper because they are not paying the people there anything. That is simply not true. They make good money there.

So why is it so much cheaper from China? Because of our out of control Government and a screwed up Tax system. Our Government punishes businesses and people for buying American.

If you buy anything made in America you have probably 50% TAXES built into everything you sell plus all kinds of EPA, OSHA and other laws making it more expensive to manufacture here.

When you buy anything made in America you have Payroll Taxes, Income Taxes (approx 33%), Permits (Taxes), business Taxes and other Taxes and those all have to be added into the cost of product.

When you buy things from China you do not have to pay any of those taxes only your State and Local Sales Taxes.

Our Tax system should not be Taxing those who work and build America. That only punishes those who work.
It should be taxed at the point of Sale. Then it would not matter what Country it was made in they would all pay same taxes. Would not matter if you are rich or poor or topless dancer or illegal immigrant working for straight cash under table when you buy anything you pay taxes.

As long as we have INCOME tax we will have a China problem along with many other Countries. So it sounds like simple solution is to change Tax system from Income tax punishing workers here to point of sale? Well not exactly, we have a corrupt Government with an out of control spending problem. If we were to change our Tax system I guarantee you they would set it up so they get even MORE money and we get screwed harder, faster and deeper.

Lets talk about Quality from China. When they started like everyone else they had issues. But they have learned and made changes and getting better every day. Almost every TV, microwave, Phone, Computer, Camera and most of car parts come from China. That is a fact whether you know it or not. Ford, General Motors, Mitsubishi and all others are having the heads, blocks, cranks, rods etc made in China and they are doing a very good job now. Technology and innovation. China is quickly becoming the leader in Tech and innovation because THEY are the ones building the stuff. They like us are always looking for better ways to do it, Faster, Better Quality, Cheaper Production costs. We are not only ones trying to do better and it would be stupid to think we are only ones who want to improve. At this point I am not even sure if America could build phones, computers cranks, rods etc as we have lost so much technology to China. When I say lost we really gave it to them and it would be hard to get back.

Trump put a Tariff (tax) on some things from China but even that is NOTHING and we all know it. We still have to pay WAY MORE to build anything here in AMERICA so even with the Tariffs it is still way cheaper to buy from China.

Out Tax System is messed up and our Government is too big and out of control. China is just taking what our Government gives them. Think about it like this, you buy a car for $100,000 if it was all made in America probably 50% or more would be going to Government in Taxes. From China same car no taxes. So that same car would cost about half. How can we compete with that? I know what the problem is. I know who started it (Bill Clinton Raped us) but I do not know how to get un-Raped.

"Dunning-Kruger Effect"
-a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. This overestimation occurs as a result of the fact that they do not have enough knowledge to know they don't have enough knowledge.

Before you argue with someone ask yourself, "Is this person mentally mature enough to grasp the concept of a different perspective?" If not there is no point to argue.

Until it actually hurts demand, tariffs don't do anything to China. Just like corporate taxes, it's the American consumer who ultimately pays for them. We can't make them charge less, we can only make us pay more. You nailed it earlier; we have to make OUR companies more competitive by getting government out of the way.

But back on topic, if y'all want to see a BUNCH of cool tools, that are Made in USA, check out Drag Race Solutions

Back to tools, when I bought my first basic set of tools when I started in heavy equipment/ truck mobile repair in 1969, it was out of the trunk of some guys car that came around. The name on them is indestro tool. Mind you, this was 1969. I still have them to this day. I have added with cornwell, mac and matco, I stay away from snapon, (sticker shock). i think that whole set, up to 15/16, sockets and combo wrenches 1/2 and 3/8 and 1/4 sets, screwddrivers pliers etc etc was $38.00 I might have spent 25000 plus in the 70s and 80s adding to my inventory. Maybe 15 years ago or so the norm for thieves was to steal service trucks. Our cat dealer lost 2 or 3 and I think komatsu lost one also. I looked into insurance just in case, the agent wanted a replacement value with current pricing. After I inventoried the truck and tallied everything up the bottom line was $160000. I just about pooped my pants, I had no idea(just like race cars and parts, lol) When my youngest grandson was going to college he worked with me for four years, he wanted to go into the same occupation. When he got out of school he got a job with the local cat dealer. His initial purchase was 25000 which included a box, but still just the basics. back in the day we had no air or cordless tools which he had to buy. To subsidize my garage tools and race operation I do use Harbor Freight somewhat and what Amazon has. I found that the Bauer 1/2 dr 20 volt impact is just a good as the Milwaukee I have in the work truck. We all have learned what we can buy and what to stay away from at HFT. But for around the house its a lot more economical than going with the cost of the tool truck brands. Anyway, just my lowly opinion and observation.

I bought my first set of tools (Craftsman)from a Sears store in Shillington, Pa. back in 1955 or 1956, I still have all of them. Over the years I've added a lot of specialty tools like LSM but basically 95% are Craftsman.

I know this is an "Old School" tool set, but I've never broken one (including the ratchets). I paid less for the entire set than the cost of three Snap-On ratchets, maybe two.
