The LS6 was killer but in a heavy Chevelle. While tires had to be a limiting factor my money would be on the all aluminum L-88 in a Corvette or Camaro.
Speaking of 7000 rpm, I remember one of the rich kids around town had a '64 Chevelle 327 (before the advent of the Mark lV BB) worked on by a very good mechanic. He was determined to get 7000 out of his "solid lifter package". I remember hearing him take out of a gas station and while his tach may have eventually hit 7000 it had long laid over with valve float. But his ego demanded 7000.
