Getting back into racing . . . but where is it?
Hi All,

I have not set foot on any racetrack property in nearly two years now. The last time I raced was in the fall of 2017 when a great friend of mine let me footbrake his Ranger at our local track. Prior to that, I hadn’t driven anything since the summer of 2016. I raced a handful of times that year and (maybe) a little more in the few preceding years. Long story short, it has been nearly a decade since I have been heavily involved in the drag racing world, or at least involved on a weekly basis anyway. After my junior dragster days were over, I never had the money to build or buy my own car and the two “full time” rides that I had never lasted much more than a season each due to circumstances beyond my control. Fast forward to now: I’m (very) quickly approaching age 30, I’m married with two kids, and have finally landed a job that has enabled me to put together a racecar. I’m very close to having it done (in the process of assembling my engine to drop into the roller I bought), but I have realized that I don’t know where to find race details anymore. Sure, I still have friends who race and there is this site, but sometimes you can’t always find everything you need and lots of stuff that is local to me will never find its way on here. It seems like the logical answer is Facebook, but I have been away from that just as long (if not longer) than I have been away from racing. So, that brings me to my actual question:

Is there any decent way to be up to date with race information (and the racing world, in general) without being on Facebook?

It seems that tracks don’t keep up with their websites like they used to, and I can’t blame them for that. However, I really don’t want to get back on Facebook. I got off for a reason and I’d prefer to keep it that way. I don’t want to junk up my wife’s feed with stuff she doesn’t care about and I don’t want to make a “fake” profile either. However, if Facebook is the only real way, then I guess that is what I will have to do.

. . . we need a Racebook!

Thanks,
Jerry Marcum

If what you are looking for is strictly big buck bracket racing, there are several places on can get solid information. If you want to know what is going on, week to week, at your local tracks, then you really are at the mercy of Facebook. It's free and it's user friendly for the track operator.

There is one irony I find amusing about this, though. Some tracks that have had their own websites for like, forever, removed the forum function from them. Presumably to avoid the negative/controversial discussions on them. And posts they didn't like being posted at any time of day. Now, what was old is new again...on Facebook. Take care. If it seems that bracket racing has gotten too expensive for you, maybe you are just doing it wrong.

Sadly that's what it has become as far as local track communication. You also have to know how to make the tracks you're really interested in be preferred so you don't get the info a few days late because FB isn't sending it to you.

If you want current and up to date info its all on facebook. Set yourself up an account just for racing purposes, nobody says you have to put your life story and personal info on it.

There’s the master list that Michael Beard publishes at Loose Rocker it’s a good source to look at.

If tracks want to use face book they should open to the public like DRR Classified is done... I don't do face book and have not missed a race I wanted to enter, the only thing I'm missing is the all the drama....LOL

Laughing Hard

Thanks for the responses guys. A couple of you mentioned that you are not on Facebook and haven't missed anything. Does that mean with your local track(s)/program(s) or the Big Bucks stuff? As you guys pointed out, the Big Bucks stuff is easy to find in a few different spots. I should have been a little more clear with my question . . .

How do you keep up with the weekly programs at your local tracks without being on Facebook?

Thanks again!

I only race about once a month, but I have a group of friends that I keep in touch with to see where they are going. Last week we were going to the Mopar race at D42, but they said on FB on Thursday that it would only be a one day event due to weather. Most of us stayed home.

I just go to their web site as these tracks around here keep their web sites pretty current. All of these tracks are listed on DRR which also lists their web site. Don’t need no Facebook.

For the local tracks it's become Facebook or guess. The other thing is to use the Rained Out deal on your phone. Some tracks use it as a communication about events, not just rainouts. I start getting messages on Friday about tracks test and tunes giving gate times and such.

If you have drama on Facebook it’s on you. The reason I say that is that you don’t have to friend anyone. Just follow the tracks you want to see a schedule from and only go on there to see that. Simple. I always laugh when people say that about Facebook.

I use an app called Teamup. At the beginning of the season I go to all the local tracks websites and download their schedules then input them into my calendar. I can add event flyers or whatever else I want. I have been doing this for a couple years now and add big money races for my friends as well. The app is really easy to use.

Schedules are subject to change, this is were you need to call the track or use facebook to get updates on race day and such.

Some tracks, you can even sign up for text messages. This comes in handy for rain outs or schedule changes.

^^^^^^^^^ This.

I don't understand the aversion to Facebook. "I hate having updated and relevant news delivered directly to me instead of having to search all over for it, and I hate seeing winner's circle photos from friends all over the country on Monday morning!" Razz

How'd y'all even get on the internet? Wink Don't you just call the track phone to listen to that recording, or wait for flyers to show up in your mailbox? Don't mean to sound curmudgeonly, but it's technology. It's there to help you.

Yep...any time I read somebody ranting about Facebook, I get this image in my head.

It's getting harder to get relevant information without facebook. I am still a hold out, and I hate Facebook ownership and company politics, but I may have to finally cave and get an account so I can see what the he11 the track is doing, and restaurant menus and everything else that a lot of people only put on Facebook. It's pretty easy to exchange tune files on facebook too, so EFI guys are kind of all over it.
The jr dragster website ceased to exist about a month ago, and about the only place to find jr dragster info now is facebook.
I'm a little concerned that I pretty much just say what I think with little filter. So I will probably offend sweeping groups of people that had no idea I was such an aho1e. I mean, you guys know. But I have mostly kept it secret from a lot of others outside of my family. Razz
