That`s a good question. When I sold the Class Win Wallys it was back about 6 or so years ago to help with the cost of building the Firebird. At that time, 12% was about all that was lost due to eBay/PayPal fees. There were no 1099 anything at the time. Haven`t sold anything on eBay for over 2 years.

I can do math. NHRA use to pay all categories more and there was a higher turnout of pro, sportsman racers and fans. That has degraded over the last 2 decades; that is bad for drag racing. I love the sport and I have an opinion that I am entirely entitled too. You aren't the thought police.....so again....pound sand.

The original post mentioned a Super Gas win at a National event at $1800.
Then,a Top Dragster driver got $1500( actually $1395 after taxes) for his win at Pomona.

Obviously “lower payouts” are NOT “bad” for NHRA National events evident by the fields meeting and exceeding the quotas weeks in advance, nor are they bad for divisional events which in most divisions have 300-600 cars competing at every race. So no, I don’t agree with your clueless opinion and neither do the 1000s of class racers that compete at these events all over the country.

Major League Baseball could field full teams, made up of players willing to pay to play MLB.
It wouldn't be a matter of skill level if MLB took that approach, but a matter of financial attrition.
With that being said, skill level in grass roots drag racing is determined by wins per entry or championships per attempt for the simple reason you don't graduate to NHRA racing anymore than you do to Super Pro at the local track.
NHRA drag racing is a matter of financial attrition, the same as all grass roots drag racing.
Get in where you fit in.
Ed i would say from my perspective that the payout does matter but that it is not the main priority when entering a National Event. Let's face it we don't race strictly for the money cause we spend way more than we make.
Then it doesn’t matter you you as it doesn’t matter to me and 99.9% of the racers competing at these events because if it did, you wouldn’t have traveled there for a chance to win $1,500! You were there for one reason only and that’s to win the most coveted prize in ALL of drag racing…an NHRA National event Wally.

I've noticed a trend and curious to see if it continues.
The races fill up real fast to quota.Then,they go over quota.
Then,the Monday before the race, a bunch of people in all categories drop out.
It will be interesting to watch as the season goes on to see if this trend continues.
early in the season, racers drop out due to their cars not ready or weather. Later in the season, weather and broken cars.
As Ed has said we had several car's withdraw because of not getting their parts in time. That being said there does seem to be a trend with racers signing up and then dropping out the Monday before the race. As a SRAC member we are working on ways to limit that so that it isn't as prevalent.
its always been that way because Monday before the race, specifically by noon closes the fields so if you don't withdraw by then, that event is counted towards your total.
Ed this is true but the changes being talked about are more geared toward the repeat offenders. It seems that there are several that have this practice of repeating this. It isn't really about the Monday before as much as the repeat offenders.
