Being an essential business or worker MEANS NOTHING. Got a call last night from my friend (races TS) that owns a heavy duty truck repair facility (actually 3) with about 60 employees total. He is now SHUTDOWN indefinitely by the state and fed. One of his workers tested positive so all 3 shops had to quarantine for 14 days BUT now another workers wife has tested positive (don't know where she got it) so the whole business (all 3 shops) are shutdown until further notice by the state and fed. He just expanded his shops last year (more bays, more techs, etc) and has some big loans. The worst part is all the trucks he is working on in his facilities are now in quarantine, not making his customers happy. He contacted his customers and told them what happened, most of them are pulling their contracts due to this. He has laid off all of his employees and looked at getting loans but it doesn't look good. He contacted his attorney and accountant, looks like bankruptcy is his only out. Moral of the story: Even being essential MEANS NOTHING, you can still be shutdown if someone in your company gets the Corona virus. Man was not built to fly ... That is horribly unfortunate. Timing is never good, but I can relate. I signed papers purchasing my business on the week of 911. NOT a good time to start owning a business. On a practical note: I wonder if there is any practical way to disinfect the trucks to return them to service? Also interesting if this will be the reaction to any positive tests. Shut down the employer for an amount of time? What about a factory of 500 workers. One tests positive and close the doors? For how long? What if another tests positive 10 days later? Also, did all workers get tested? If so, and they were negative, what is the benefit of closing the shop? Foxtrot Juliet Bravo

If the trucks in his shop are complete and ready to roll and as long as no one but the owner is required to touch the vehicle, the virus should die on any surface after 72 hours. So owners should be able to pick up trucks that are finished by Friday. Rob Robertson

Frank, are his shops located in CT? I am guessing wherever they are, it must be a "commie" state run by over-bearing libs. That is an awfully hard pill to swallow, and I feel terrible for your friend, and the many others who are in that position. I don't / can't understand how any state authority can make such a ridiculous determination and order an entire business to shut down because of that, and especially to lock down their customer's assets. The "until further notice" sounds arbitrary, and is basically a death sentence for most businesses. Sure, I could maybe understand if it was an old folks home full of 80 year olds with heart & lung problems. These are trucks, and the employees are unlikely to be within 6 feet of each other anyways. I think if I was in that situation, I would "liberate" the customers' trucks and return them to the owners, surely there can't be enough enforcement bodies to monitor all these decrees routinely. Besides, they have said this disease can only live on hard surfaces for a max of 3-6 days. I fear the long term domino effects from this crap are going to do some serious and semi-permanent damage to the economy. Lots of these small & medium size businesses will not make it through, a lot will not come back. Dan "Jim" Moore Much too young to feel this damn old!!

long term domino effects is exactly what will happen. A lot of these O/O's work loads off the internet called load boards. They can't obtain the truck, they have to cancel the load or lease a unit. Basically make almost nothing. The cost of the rental or short term kills majority of the profit if not all. Critical loads, Different protocol.A sub unit will be towed out immediately. This message has been edited. Last edited by: TD3550,

Hydrogen Peroxide vapor generator will clean anything in those trucks. I can also bleach fabric though. Regular truck wash will clean the outside. This virus is actually pretty fragile right now from what I have been able to research. You hear quite a bit how long it will live on different surfaces but in many cases there isn't a viable amount left of it to infect you even though it can still be found present. When Facebook started getting very popular,I was thinking that message boards like this would see their ultimate demise. Turns out that this is one of the few remaining places where people all have somewhat intelligent dialogue among many issues.

Well at least some do, others hard to tell what world they are living in. But yes it is nice to be able to come on here and see conversations that are not usually politically one sided and most use rational thought.

Sucks for sure for the small business owners, I would think however than anything to do with trucking would find a way to stay open, unless there is a severe risk.

Spoke to a friend I used to work with at a trucking company, LTL national carrier. Heard they had a couple of people positive, some with symptoms. I heard they had a vendor come in and disinfect the trucks involved so they could keep them in service.

Normally I simply chose to ignore anything you post, but in this situation people are struggling to keep doors open and feed their families and all you seem capable of is useless contributions. Please move along to another board or something and let the grown ups have an intelligent conversation.

It is easy for politicians to spend money they have not produced. Personally, I am grateful to still be able to work. Any increase in pay from this situation would come from business owners, or tax payers. Being the business owner, despite what many people who have never owned a typical business believe, a 50% increase in base payroll is not possible without passing the cost on to the customer. Let's just leave it as it is.....JMO.
