Don Schumacher Racing · It is with heavy hearts that the Schumacher family announce the passing of motorsports icon Don Schumacher. The NHRA team owner and Funny Car pioneer had spent the past several months privately battling lung cancer before succumbing to illness-related complications on Wednesday, December 20. Schumacher, who was 79 at the time of his passing, leaves a lasting legacy on not only the NHRA community, where he etched his name as one of the sport’s most successful team owners and a champion for the advancement of safety innovation, but on the motorsports community as a whole. When you think of some of the greatest in Drag Racing History, Garlits, Force, Burnstien, Hill, Muldowney, Prudhomme, Don Shumaker is in that class. He probably made a bigger impact as a Team Owner to the sport than he did as a driver. Those contributions may not be as obvious but important just the same. His Team Championships were an indication of his drive and innovation. I believe had Blaine Johnson and Gary Ormsby lived they to would be in that small elite class.
