The weight of it all
As I get older each year I seem to put on a few extra pounds. After I had my second bout with covid in early 22 I had to take several rounds of steroids to open my lungs. Now it seems to be much harder to shed the winter coat than ever before, I am in my early 60's and don't want to let this extra weight turn into a problem down the road. What are your thoughts or experiences on this subject? My job and thousands of softball games over 20 years have destroyed my knees so jogging is not really an option. Also don't want to take pills that make me feel jittery or my heart is coming out of my chest. Thanks

I am 59 and sort of a fitness junkie. What Ed said will help although the 2 gallons of water is extreme, 1 gallon is more realistic.

Cutting out starches, sugars etc will definitely help control calorie intake which is truly the key, burn more than you put in. Everyone has a base metabolic need and that becomes less as we get older. Figure that out with one of the online calculators and then get into a deficit, 300-500 calorie deficit is needed to lose about 1-1 1/2 lbs per week.

I weight train and do a boxing workout 6 days per week. Heavy bag, speed bag and jump rope. Jump rope is great cardio but can be hard on your knees.

Here is the link to one of the calorie calculators that uses your age in the calculation.

I will be 82 in a couple of months and have weighed 180-185 for more than 30 years. I am 6ft tall and in pretty good health. I guess I eat pretty good, don't drink or smoke, and stay physically active all the time but do nothing special. I doubt many have disregarded their health more than I have in the past and I think what has got me this far is that I keep moving, I mean moving! Never even thought I would live this long. You all take care.

2 gallons keeps you in the bathroom so much you don't have time to eat. Laughing Hard

Telling a 60 yo man to drink 2 gallons of water a day is cruel.
I had the Covid weight gain last year and have bad knees and replacement hips. I watched the calories and started going to fitness class concentrating on aerobics more than strength. Also using the treadmill and the recumbent bike. Started with a walking deal but it hurt my knees too much especially walking on asphalt for miles.

Correct on diet and water. You also need to exercise some at least. I spent the money on a Total Gym and laugh all you want, it works. It's at home so I can use it whenever works best for me, no membership to pay for, all the benefits and none of the drawbacks....I can work out watching tv if I want. Zero impact so easy on the joints and settings for every strength/fitness level....Money well spent if you ask me...

I recently got one of these. It's pretty low impact but cardio is way up there.

Was on Prednisone during the ICU adventure in June for 3 days and on a Vent. It wasn't pretty. for lung issues. Had to stay on the meds for a while after. I put on 31 Lbs. It takes time with proper diet There is no overnight deal on this as you know.

Prednisone alters the salt balance of the body maintained by the kidneys. It causes your body to hold onto sodium. Sodium brings water along with it. With more sodium retained, there is more potassium lost. This imbalance leads to swelling in the hands, legs and feet, along with the face.

If you were on it too
Good luck to you. Get healthy.....

I am fighting Type 2 Diabetes. same treatment here, minimize sugar, carbs, etc.

No such thing as good carbs.

I have lost 15 lbs by just cutting the junk.

Steak, steamed veggies are good. Eggs, bacon, sausage are good.

When you go for a burger, cut the fries and the drink.

These are some things I am doing along with the oral meds to reduce blood sugar.

At 65, its difficult to change my ways, but I have to do it to keep my CDL, and of course live. LOL

Nothing but water to drink

Walk 2 miles a day. If you have a treadmill do an incline walk

Best source of calories is a lean protein

Safe weight loss is roughly 2-3 pounds per week, So don’t think 20 pounds of real weight is going to come off in 3 weeks time.

best diet plan I have seen.

6 small meals a day/
Limit carbs and no carbs last meal
No soft drinks non of them are good for you
to understand the bad knees thing. Yopu can do low-impact exercises . Stair maters, stationary bike and walking at a steady pace burns same calories as running(if knees allow).
Like your car its the combo that counts. Second, it will not work fully if just diet it needs to be a small life change.
Another tip you do not have to stop eating foods you love you just limit them most of the time.If you cut all fat and/or carbs your body will figure it out and quit burning fat. Best to diet 6 days and allow some cheating on 7 day and best if that is on an exercise day.
