The sad thing about losing freedoms, is that it is seldom that you get any of them back. It's a one way street.

So one year, there is a bunch of support for gun control, and the population and legislature lets some gun freedoms slide. But those freedoms don't come back when the political climate changes. It's simply a new starting point for that next moment in time where people aren't concerned about their rights again, and further erosion of rights happens. It never stops and it never goes the other way. Well, maybe not never. If you feel that smoking pot and killing babies is your right, you are gaining traction.

So maybe next year, someone says something very disturbing to Americans on the internet. So we jerk our legislative knee and erode our freedom of speech. And the year after we lose some ground with our freedom to be Christians. It's like pushing lemmings off of a cliff. One by one they topple over, never to come back. Until one day we are completely out of lemmings, or rights.

But at least we can smoke pot to forget about our fallen freedoms.
